December 31, 1985, En route from Alabama to a New Year's Eve show in Dallas, Rick Nelson's DC-3 crash-landed in a field near DeKalb, Texas, Rick was 45 years old at the time. The burning plane trapped its passengers inside, killing all aboard, except the pilot and co-pilot, who escaped through the cockpit window. Early press reports suggested that drug usage (crack smoking) aboard the plane might have played a role in the fire that killed Rick, his band, and Helen Blair. In fact, both the F.A.A. and the National Transportation and Safety Board report determined conclusively that the fire had begun in a malfunctioning gas heater. Between 1958 and 1972 Rick had a handful of top ten hits including "Poor Little Fool", "Lonesome Town", "Travelin' Man", "Hello Mary Lou", "Young World" and "Garden Party".
How Long by Rick Nelson
Time and time I've tried to speak
But no one seems to listen
And life's too short to carry on
So I guess I'll just sit here and listen
How long
Time goes so slowly when you want to go
And you can't find a reason to leave
I think you know what it's doing to me
And that's fine, if that's what you wanna see
How long before the train goes by
It never seems to get here
How long before the train goes by
Will I just sit here forever

This Is Love by George Harrison
Precious words drift away from their meaning
And the sun melts the chill from our lives
Helping us all to remember what we came here for
This is love, this is la la la-la love
Little things that will change you forever
May appear from way out of the blue
Making fools of everybody who don't understand
This is love, this is la la la-la love
Since our problems have been our own creation
They also can be overcome
When we use the power provided free to everyone
This is love, this is la la la-la love

This is love, this is la la la-la love

December 28, 1983, At the age of 39, Dennis Wilson, drummer for the Beach Boys drowns while swimming near his boat in the harbor at Marina del Ray, Calif. When he woke up that morning he began drinking screwdrivers, by 3 pm he was shitfaced, Dennis announced he was going for a swim. He decided to dive to the bottom to try to find some things he had thrown off his boat years earlier during a fight with his wife. He combed the ocean floor, and emerged from the water holding a picture of his ex wife. Dennis dove again for more treasures. He didn't resurface. Dennis was the only member of the Beach Boys that could actually surf. His body was buried at sea.
excerpt from Still Surfin by the Beach Boys
He used to ride the sidewalks in a landlocked town
A solitary surfer still he got around
He had his favorite spots now
Where the best rides could be found
With posters on his wall from "Surfer" magazine
His room looked like a shrine to the surfin' scene
Go to Hawaii out of high school was his big time college dream
(That's where the girls are)
Did you ever wonder what happened to surfer Joe
He up and took a ??? down to Mexico
With a pretty senorita we both used to know
You can see him catch a wave in the mornin' light
And sometimes you can find him on his board at night
A silouette on water as the sun dips outta sight
He's still surfin'
(Still surfin')
He's still surfin'
(Still surfin')

Beautiful Delilah by Chuck Berry
Beautiful Delilah, sweet as apple pie
Always gets a second look from fellas passin' by
Every time you see her she's with a different guy
Beautiful Delilah, that's the reason why
The better don't allow me fool around with you
You are so tantalizing you just can't be true
Beautiful Delilah, dressed in the latest style
Swingin' like a pendulum, walkin' down the aisle
Deep romantic eyes, speak so low in miles
Maybe she will settle down and marry after a while
Beautiful Delilah, bathin' in the sun
An audience of 17, and notice not a one
Local Casanova who wouldn't be outdone
Let her steal his heart away, break it just for fun

Faith by George Michael
Well I guess it would be nice If I could touch your body
I know not everybody Has got a body like you
But I've got to think twice Before I give my heart away
And I know all the games you play Because I play them too
Oh but I Need some time off from that emotion
Time to pick my heart up off the floor
And when that love comes down Without devotion
Well it takes a strong man baby But I'm showing you the door
'Cause I gotta have faith...
Baby I know you're asking me to stay
Say please, please, please, don't go away
You say I'm giving you the blues
Maybe You mean every word you say
Can't help but think of yesterday
And another who tied me down to loverboy rules
Before this river Becomes an ocean
Before you throw my heart back on the floor
Oh baby I reconsider My foolish notion
Well I need someone to hold me
But I'll wait for something more
Yes
I've gotta have faith...

In My Life by The Beatles
There are places I'll remember
All my life
though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends
I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all
But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life
I love you more

The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)
Christmas, Christmas time is near
Time for toys and time for cheer
We've been good, but we can't last
Hurry Christmas, hurry fast
Want a plane that loops the loop
Me, I want a hula hoop
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas, don't be late.

December 21, 1952, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" by Jimmy Boyd goes to number one. Jimmy was only 10 years old when he recorded this song. When it was released some people thought the portrayal of a married woman having an affair was pornographic. The song was banned in some cities. A closer listen implies that the man kissing mommy is actually the dad. Also banned that year was "Rudolph The Penis Nosed reindeer" by Barbra Streisand, "Frosty The Slut" by Sammy Davis Junior and "Blow Me For Christmas Baby" by Bing Crosby.
I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause by Jimmy Boyd
I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus
Underneath the mistletoe last night.
She didn't see me creep
down the stairs to have a peep;
She thought that I was tucked up
in my bedroom fast asleep.
Then, I saw Mommy tickle Santa Claus
Underneath his beard so snowy white;
Oh, what a laugh it would have been
If Daddy had only seen
Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night

December 20, 1973, Bobby Darin dies of heart failure at the age of 37. It occurs during Darin's second open-heart surgery in two years. He had a string of 14 Top Twenty singles between 1958 and 1966. The tune most often associated with him is "Mack the Knife," which was Number One for nine weeks in 1959. Darin was born to a poor, working-class family in The Bronx, New York, his father disappeared a few months before he was born. It was not until he was an adult that he learned that the woman he thought to be his sister Nina, 19 years his senior, was in fact his mother and his “mother” Polly was his grandmother!. The identity of his true father was never publicly disclosed. Childhood rheumatic fever had damaged Bobby’s heart, he knew someday he would need open-heart surgery, but delayed it for years hoping for medical advancements. Darin had been in 13 films, composed two full movie scores, and five title songs. He was a music publisher and record producer, he was also a Mensa member, with an IQ of 137, (in the top 2%). Bobby once said "Conceit is thinking you're great; egotism is knowing it." Sandra Dee, (his wife) said "Genius is close to madness and sometimes, yeah, it got in the way. He was simply one of a kind." Bobby Darins final utterance was his childhood phone number.
You're the reason I'm livin by Bobby Darin
You're the breath that I take
You're the stars in my heaven
You're the sun when I wake.
You're the reason I'm livin' …
Whoa …
you carry me through
All of life’s little burdens
I'd be lost without you.
A long, long time ago
When I was down
Whoa …
you picked me up
And showed me
True love still could be found.
You're the reason I do things
You're the things that I do
You're the reason I'm livin'
I'd be lost without you.
Come and tell me again …
You're the reason I'm livin' …
Whoa …
you carry me through
All of life's little burdens
I'd be lost without you.

December 19, 1970, President Nixon commends MGM chief, Mike Curb (later to be Lieutenant Governor of California), for taking the initiative in ridding the music biz of drug users through his well-publicized dismissal of 18 MGM acts who supposedly advocated drug use. Actually, this was an excuse to get rid of some unsuccessful acts, since popular performers like Eric Burdon or Bobby Bloom, who did the same thing, were kept by the label. During the early 70s, MGM filled up its performers with family entertainers and "bubblegum" acts like Sammy Davis, Jr., Petula Clark and The Osmonds, which were extremely successful in domestic and overseas markets, helping the label to right itself financially and helping the world to get self induced lobotomies.

Like A Virgin by Madonna
I made it through the wilderness
Somehow I made it through
didn't know how lost I was
Until I found you
I was beat incomplete
Id been had, I was sad and blue
But you made me feel
Yeah, you made me feel
Shiny and new
Like a virgin
Touched for the very first time
Like a virgin
When your heart beats next to mine
Gonna give you all my love, boy
My fear is fading fast
Been saving it all for you cause only love can last
Your so fine and your mine
Make me strong, yeah you make me bold
Oh your love thawed out
Yeah, your love thawed out
What was scared and cold
Oooh, oooh, oooh
Your so fine and your mine
Ill be yours till the end of time
cause you made me feel
Yeah, you made me feel
Ive nothing to hide
Like a virgin,
ooh, ooh
Like a virgin
Feels so good inside
When you hold me, and your heart beats,
and you love me
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Ooh, babyCant you hear my heart beat
For the very first time?

Dancing and prancing in Jingle Bell Square
In the frosty air
What a bright time it's the right time

So this is Christmas And what have you done
Another year over And a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas I hope you have fun

Let's hope it's a good one Without any fear
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let's stop all the fight
Now A very merry Christmas And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one Without any fear
And so this is Christmas And what have we done
Another year over And a new one just begun
And so Happy Christmas I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one The old and the young
Now A very merry Christmas And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one Without any fear

December 15, 1944, An airplane carrying bandleader Glenn Miller, disappears over the English Channel en route from Bedford, England, to Paris. Alton Glenn Miller was born in Clarinda, Iowa on March 1, 1904. In 1915, Miller's family moved to Grant City, Missouri where he was given his first trombone and then played in the town band. He attended the University of Colorado but quit after only one year. He toured with several orchestras and ended up in Los Angeles where he landed a spot in Ben Pollack's group, a band that included a guy named Benny Goodman. In 1928 he moved to New York City, he soon sent for, and married his college sweetheart, Helen Burger, For the next three years he earned his living as a free-lance trombonist and arranger. Miller developed a distinctive sound in which a high-pitched clarinet carried the melody, doubled by a saxophone section playing an octave lower, and he used that sound to produce a series of hits that remain definitive examples of swing music. He became one of the top selling musicians in the world. On October 7, 1942, Miller reported for induction into the Army and was immediately assigned to the Army Specialist Corps. He ultimately organized the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. In late 1943 he and the band were shipped out to England. He was preparing to go on to Paris when the plane on which he was traveling disappeared over the English Channel and he died at age 40.
Glenn once said "There is no rest, there must be no rest for a fellow when he is successful. He has got to keep right on going... And don’t think that I am the product of luck or breaks or anything like that. I have worked hard ever since I came out of the University of Colorado. I have played the trombone in so many bands, I can’t count them all."
Among his many hits were “Moonlight Serenade” (his theme song), “In the Mood,” and “Tuxedo Junction.”
In The Mood by Glenn Miller and Andy Razaf
Who's the lovin' daddy with the beautiful eyes
What a pair o' lips, I'd like to try 'em for size
I'll just tell him, "Baby, won't you swing it with me"
Hope he tells me maybe, what a wing it will be
So, I said politely "Darlin' may I intrude"
He said "Don't keep me waitin' when I'm in the mood"
First I held him lightly and we started to dance
Then I held him tightly what a dreamy romance
And I said "Hey, baby, it's a quarter to three
There's a mess of moonlight, won't-cha share it with me"
"Well" he answered "Baby, don't-cha know that it's rude
To keep my two lips waitin' when they're in the mood"
In the mood, that's what he told me
In the mood, and when he told me
In the mood, my heart was skippin
'It didn't take me long to say
"I'm in the mood now"
In the mood for all his kissin'
In the mood his crazy lovin'
In the mood what I was missin'
It didn't take me long to say
"I'm in the mood now"
"Who's the lovin' daddy with the beautiful eyes
What a pair o' lips, I'd like to try 'em for size
I'll just tell him, "Baby, won't you swing it with me"
Hope he tells me maybe, what a wing it will be

December 14, 1963 , Dinah Washington dies at the age of 39. Washington was born Ruth Jones in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, her family moved to Chicago while she was still a child. She became a local gospel star by the age of 15, she was discovered by Lionel Hampton at the age of 18, and for the rest of her life was on the road. Known as Queen of the Blues and Queen of the Juke Boxes, she was one of the most beloved and controversial singers of the mid-20th century , Dinah suffered her share of heartbreak in her personal life, but she thrived on the growing audience response that greeted her signature tunes - "What a difference a Day Makes," "Evil Gal Blues," and "Baby (You've Got What it Takes)". She was married seven times and had many lovers including Quincy Jones and Dick (Night train) Lane. Dinah lived large, with her penchant for clothes, cars, furs, and diets and her famously feisty personality she could be a total bitch one moment and just as generous the next. Struggling with a weight problem, Washington died of an accidental overdose of diet pills mixed with alcohol.
Is You Is Or Is You Aint My Baby by Dinah Washington
I got a man that's always late
Any time we have a date
But I love him
Yes I love him
I'm gonna walk up to his gate
See if we can't get this thing straight
Cause I want him
And I'm gonna have him
Say is you is, or is you ain't my baby
The way you're acting lately, it makes me doubt
You is still my baby, baby
But it seems like my flame in your heart, done gone out
A man is a creature
That has always been strange
Just when you're sure of one
You'll find that he's gone and made a change
Is you is or is you ain't my baby
Well, maybe baby's found somebody new
Or is my baby still my baby true
Now is you is or is you ain't my baby
Maybe baby's found somebody new
Is my baby still my baby true
I guess my baby's found somebody new
And I'd better get right up and go out and find me somebody too
I said I'd go out and find me somebody too

Cooke had checked into the Hacienda Motel in L.A., along with a women (Lisa Boyer), the manager of the motel (Bertha Franklin) made him sign in as Mr. and Mrs. Cooke. 20 minutes after checking in the manager had a knock on her door, it was Sam dressed only in his coat and one shoe. Lisa Boyer tells police she was kidnapped by Sam and that he was trying to rape her when she ran out. It is later revealed that Lisa Boyer is a prostitute. As far as Sams family and friends are concerned the truth of what happened that night was never fully revealed.
At the Mount Sinai Baptist Church in Los Angeles, In an emotion packed atmosphere, super charged by the singing of Lou Rawls, Bobby Blue Bland and Arthur Lee Simpkins, women fainted, tears ran down men's cheeks and onlookers shouted. Gospel singer Bessy Griffin, who was to appear on the funeral program, became so grief stricken she had to be carried off. Ray Charles stepped in from the audience to sing and play 'Angels Keep Watching Over Me'.
Some posthumous releases followed, many of which became hits, including "A Change Is Gonna Come" an early protest song which some regard as his greatest composition.
A Change Is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke
I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh and just like the river I've been running ever since
It's been a long, a long time coming But I know a change gonna come,
oh yes it will
It's been too hard living but I'm afraid to die
Cause I don't know what's up there beyond the sky
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come,
oh yes it will
Then I go to my brother And I say brother help me please
But he winds up knockin' me Back down on my knees
Ohhhhhhhhh.....
There been times that I thought I couldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, a long time coming But I know a change gonna come,
oh yes it will

Cause mama I'm sure hard to handle,

And I'm a man of great experience

Two and a half hours of material were recorded at this session. None of the songs was released for nearly three decades. One of the songs they played was End Of The Road by Jerry Lee Lewis.
End Of The Road
Well the way is dark The night is long
I don't care if I never get home
I'm waiting At the end of the road
Well the stars may not shine Neither the moon
What the heck we don't want no moon
I'm waiting At the end of the road
You can jump in my Ford and give it some gas
Pull out the front, don't give me no sass
Take you foot slap it on the floor
When you get ahead we'll rock some more
Oh The way is dark The night is long I don't care
if I never get home
I'm waiting At the end of the road
You can jump in my Ford and give it some gas
Flip out the front, don't give me no sass
Take you foot slap it on the floor
When you get ahead we'll rock some more
Well the way is dark The night is long
I don't care if I never get home
I'm waiting At the end of the road

December 8, 1980, A retarded little fat man asks John Lennon for his is autograph. John signs a copy of his new album (Double Fantasy) for the retard. John looked the man in the eyes and asked him three times if there was something else he could do for him, the retard just shook his head. Later that night Lennon was returning to his apartment building with Yoko Ono from a recording session (they had just finished recording the song "Walking On Thin Ice" ) the fat little retard was waiting in the shadows and he shot John dead, Lennon was 40 years old. Lennon was shot in his chest, back and left arm. After shooting him the retard took out a copy of the Catcher In The Rye and just stood there reading until the police arrested him. He was found to be insane and is locked away in a psychiatric hospital. During an interview in 1967 John was asked how he expected to die, Lennon's answer was "I'll probably be popped off by some loony."
Excerpt from Walking On Thin Ice by John and Yoko
I may cry some day
But the tears will dry whichever way
And when our hearts return to ashes
It'll be just a story
It'll be just a story

Watching The Wheels by John Lennon, from the Double Fantasy album.
People say I'm crazy doing what I'm doing
Well they give me all kinds of warnings to save me from ruin
When I say that I'm o.k. well they look at me kind of strange
Surely you're not happy now you no longer play the game
People say I'm lazy dreaming my life away

Well they give me all kinds of advice designed to enlighten me
When I tell them that I'm doing fine watching shadows on the wall
Don't you miss the big time boy you're no longer on the ball
I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round

I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go
Ah, people asking questions lost in confusion

Well I tell them there's no problem, only solutions
Well they shake their heads and they look at me as if I've lost my mind
I tell them there's no hurry
I'm just sitting here doing time
I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round

I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go
I just had to let it go
I just had to let it go

December 7, 1967, Otis Redding records "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay". Redding was killed three days later in a plane crash. Upon its release Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay, went to number one.
Dock Of The Bay by Otis Redding
Sitting in the morning sun
I'll be sitting till the evening comes
Watching the ships roll in
Then I watch them roll away again, yeah
Sitting on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Oh, sitting on the dock of the bay
Wasting time,
I left my home in Georgia
And headed for Frisco Bay'
Cause I have nothing to live for
And look's like nothins gonna come my way
So, I'm sitting on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
I'm sitting on the dock of the bay
Wasting time
Look's like nothing's gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I cant do what 10 people tell me to do
So, I guess I'll remain the same
Sittin' here resting my bones,
And this lonelinessss won't leave me alone,
Two thousand miles I've roamed,
Just to make this dock my home.
Sitting on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away,
ooohh ooohh
Sitting on the dock of the bay
Wasting time

Small Cow Says...

This day in music history.

December 6, 1969, The Rolling Stones play a free "thank you" concert for 300,000 fans at the Altamont Speedway in Livermore, California. Also on the bill were Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Santana and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young . In an interview before the concert Mick Jagger said "It's creating a sort of a microcosmic society.... It sets an example to the rest of America, as to how one can behave in nice gatherings". The promoter hired Hells Angels to be security and paid them in free beer. The event rapidly falls into a disaster when the Angels start beating people up with pool cues. By the time Jefferson Starship takes the stage it is so out of hand Marty Balin (lead vocalist) tells the Angels to stop the fighting so one of the Angels punchs him and knocked him out, right on stage. By the end of the concert four people would be dead, including one who was stabbed. The murder is filmed and included in the film "Gimme Shelter" which premiers exactly one year later.
Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones
Oh, a storm is threat’ning
My very life today
If I don’t get some shelter
Oh yeah, I’m gonna fade away
War, children, it’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
War, children,
it’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
Ooh, see the fire is sweepin’
Our very street today
Burns like a red coal carpet
Mad bull lost it’s way
War, children, it’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
War, children, it’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
Rape, murder!
It’s just a shot away
I tell you love, sister,
it’s just a kiss away
It’s just a kiss away

This day in music history.

December 5, 1791, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, dies in Vienna Austria at the age of 35. The actual cause of Mozart's death is a matter of conjecture. His death record listed "hitziges Frieselfieber" ("severe miliary fever"), a description that does not identify the cause as it would be diagnosed in modern medicine. Dozens of theories have been proposed, including trichinosis, mercury poisoning, and rheumatic fever. The practice of bleeding medical patients is also cited as a contributing cause.
He was born January 27, 1756. His father, Leopold wanted to exhibit his children's God-given genius, His daughter Maria Anna, was a gifted keyboard player, so in mid-1763 the family set out on a tour that took them to Paris and London, visiting numerous courts en route. Mozart astonished his audiences with his precocious skills; he played to the French and English royal families, had his first music published and wrote his earliest symphonies. It was on this tour that Wolfgang became ill with something diagnosed as "scarlet fever rash"; now thought to be erythema nodosum, a rheumatic nodular eruption now often associated with tuberculosis. Leopold, under the advice of a local physician, administered a cure that included an occasional glass of milk with ground melon seeds and a pinch of poppy seed. Within two weeks Wolfgang was well again, but the episode was a portent of more serious health problems to come.
Mozart was a studiously hard worker, and by his own admission his extensive knowledge and intellect about music developed out of many years of close study of the European musical tradition. It was indicated in a letter to his father that he could write a piece finished in his head on paper while composing another at the same time.
Mozart once said "My great-grandfather used to say that to talk well and eloquently was a very great art, but that an equally great one was to know the right moment to stop."

December 4, 1993, Frank Zappa died of prostrate cancer. Zappa once said ''My job is extrapolating everything to its most absurd extreme.'' Born in Baltimore on Dec. 21, 1940, Frank Zappa came to California at age 10. He began to play drums at the age of 12, and was playing in R & B groups by high school, switching to guitar at 18. In 1964 Zappa joined a local R&B band, The Soul Giants, he soon assumed leadership, renaming the band "The Mothers." Frank would go on to record over 50 records full of some of the greatest music of the last 100 years. When asked how he felt about the fact he never had a big hit he said "The crux of the biscuit is: If it entertains you, fine. Enjoy it. If it doesn't, then blow it out your ass. I do it to amuse myself. If I like it, I release it. If somebody else likes it, that's a bonus. Most people wouldn't know music if it came up and bit them on the ass."
Two days after his death his widow, Gail, and children, Dweezil, Moon, Ahmet, and Diva, released a statement to the press that simply stated: "Composer Frank Zappa left for his final tour just before 6pm Saturday."
You Are What You Is by Frank Zappa
Do you know what you are?
You are what you is
You is what you am
(A cow don't make ham . . . )
You ain't what you're not So see what you got
You are what you is An' that's all it 'tis
A foolish young man From a middle class fam'ly

started singing the blues cause he thought it was manly
He tells you that chitlins . . .
Well, they taste just like candy He thinks that he's got
De whole thang down From the Nivea Lotion To de Royal Crown
A foolish young man Of the Negro Persuasion

Devoted his life To become a caucasian
He stopped eating pork
He stopped eating greens
He traded his dashiki for some Jordache Jeans
He learned to play golf An' he got a good score
Now he says to himself
"I AIN'T NO NIGGER NO MORE . . . HEY! HEY! HEY!"
Who is who
'N what is what
'N why is this
Appropriot
If you don't like
What you has got
Drop it in the dirt
'N let it rot
Someone else
Will surely come
N pick it up
Cause he wants some
And when one day
You wonder who
You used to was
N what you do
You'll scratch your head
N look around
But what you lost
Will not be found
Do you know what you are?

You are what you is
You is what you am
A cow don't make a ham
You ain't what you're not
So see what you got

December 3, 1970, During a concert by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention at the Montreaux Casino, someone throws a bottle rocket into the ceiling. The place burns to the ground not only is Franks equipment lost but so is Deep Purples, they were recording in the basement studio at the time. The incident is immortalized by Deep Purple in their song "Smoke on the Water," which will become a hit (#4) in 1973.
Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple
We all came out to montreux On the lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile We didn't have much time
Frank zappa and the mothers Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun Burned the place to the ground
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky
They burned down the gambling house It died with an awful sound
Funky Claude was running in and out Pulling kids out the ground
When it all was over We had to find another place
But Swiss time was running out It seemed that we would lose the race
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky
We ended up at the grand hotel It was empty cold and bare
But with the rolling truck stones thing just outside
Making our music there
With a few red lights and a few old beds
We make a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this I know well never forget
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky

December 2, 1974, Carl Douglas "Kung Fu Fighting" makes it to the number one spot on the pop charts.
Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas
Everybody was kung-fu fighting
Those cats were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit frightening
But they fought with expert timing
They were funky China men from funky Chinatown
They were chopping them up and they were chopping them down
It's an ancient Chinese art and everybody knew their part
From a feint into a slip, and kicking from the hip
Everybody was kung-fu fighting
Those cats were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit frightening
But they fought with expert timing
There was funky Billy Chin and little Sammy Chung
He said here comes the big boss, lets get it on
We took a bow and made a stand, started swinging with the hand
The sudden motion made me skip now we're into a brand knew trip
Everybody was kung-fu fighting
Those cats were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit frightening
But they did it with expert timing
make sure you have expert timing
Kung-fu fighting,
had to be fast as lightning
