This day in music history.

July 31, 1964, Jim Reeves died when the single-engine Beechcraft he was piloting crashed during a thunderstorm near Nashville, TN. Jim had over 50 top 40 hits on the country charts and 6 top 40 cross over hits. At the time of his death his song "I Won't Forget You" was climbing the charts.
I Wont Forget You by Jim Reeves
I know that I won't forget you
For I've loved you too much for too long
Though you don't want me now I'll still love you
Till the breath in my body is gone.
That's how it is with me and you'll always be
The only love I ever knew
I'll forget many things in my lifetime
But my darling, I won't forget you.
That's how it is with me and you'll always be
The only love I ever knew
I'll forget many things in my lifetime
But my darling, I won't forget you...

July 29, 1972, Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress) by The Hollies was at number 9 on the US singles chart. The song would make all the way to number two and would be the bands biggest American hit.
Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress) by The Hollies
Saturday night I was downtown
Working for the FBI
Sitting in a nest of bad men
Whiskey bottles piling high
Bootlegging boozer on the west side
Full of people who are doing wrong
Just about to call up the DA man
When I heard this woman singing a song
A pair of 45's made me open my eyes
My temperature started to rise
She was a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5-9 beautiful tall
With just one look I was a bad mess
'Cause that long cool woman had it all
I saw her heading to the table
Well a tall walking big black cat
When Charlie said I hope that you're able, boy
Well I'm telling you she knows where it's at
Well then suddenly we heard the sirens
And everybody started to run
Jumping under doors and tables
Well I heard somebody shooting a gun
Well the DA was pumping my left hand
And she was holding my right
Well I told her, "Don't get scared
"Cause you're gonna be spared"
Well I'm gonna be forgiven
If I wanna spend my living
With a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5-9 beautiful tall
With just one look I was a bad mess
'Cause that long cool woman had it all
Had it all, had it all, had it all...

July 28, 1750, At the age of 65 a poor and blind Johann Sebastian Bach died from a stroke. He was buried in an unmarked grave at St. Thomas' Church. He composed over 1,100 works in almost every musical genre of the time. Bach and his wive's Maria Barbara and later after Maria's death Anna Magdalena had 20 children 10 of which died in infancy. During his life his music was dismissed as "too involved and lacking in immediate melodic appeal" most of his works were not published until a century after his death. Bach's widow Anna died in poverty in 1760. Bach is now considered to be the last of the great Baroque composers and one of the greatest composers that ever lived. Bach once said "The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul".

Aint No Good Life by Lynyrd Skynyrd
Aint no good life
Not the one that I lead
cause the more I fight the sadness, yeah
It only seems the more that I grieve
Well I look back on the good times
As some lost part of me
I wanna know, tell me why is it so
Well just because I don't pray
Lord, that don't mean I ain't forgiven
Just cause I'm alive
That don't mean I'm makin a livin
I'm gonna get myself together
Im gonna try a dyin attempt
Talkin about the good times slippin by
Yeah I tell ya
I don't even know where last month went
Well I cant make no money baby
Well cause my moneys already spent
And I know where it went
I said it went on that damn rent
Well I don't mean change, baby
I mean foldin money
Well I want lovin,
said I don't need a buddy
I don't need nobody,
now
Ain't exactly my idea
Its sort of old, borrowed and blue
Just tryin to say
Don't try that straight life buddy
Oh youll find it kind of hard on you
Women, don't try to cook nothin up,
ooh
Brother you know you'll only wind up
in your own stew
Just don't let nobody tell you,
oh
what you oughta do

This day in music history.

July 26, 2000, During an Oasis concert at a show at the Paleo Festival in Switzerland an audience member throws a bottle that hits the bass players guitar. Liam Gallagher tells the crowd "A bottle has been thrown. We're not standing for it. Good night." Oasis then stormed off the stage and went back to their hotel. The audience stood and jeered the empty stage for twenty minutes before police were able to clear the place. The concert had lasted less then an hour and some would say its just a shame that the guy who threw the bottle had such bad aim.
Don't Look Back In Anger by Oasis
Slip inside the eye of your mind
Don't you know you might find
A better place to play
You said that you'd once never been
All the things that you've seen
Will slowly fade away
So I start the revolution from my bed
Cos you said the brains I have went to my head
Step outside the summertime's in bloom
Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off your face
You ain't ever gonna burn my heart out
So Sally can wait, she knows its too late
as we're walking on by
Her soul slides away, but don't look back in anger
I hear you say Take me to the place where you go
Where nobody knows if it's night or day
Please don't put your life in the hands
Of a Rock n Roll band
Who'll throw it all away
So I start the revolution from my bed
Cos you said the brains I have went to my head
Step outside the summertime's in bloom
Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off your face
You ain't ever gonna burn my heart out
So Sally can wait, she knows its too late
as we're walking on by
Her soul slides away, but don't look back in anger
I hear you say
Don't look back in anger
Don't look back in anger
Don't look back in anger
At least not today

July 24, 1972, Bobby Ramirez, drummer with Edger Winters White Trash was drinking in a Chicago bar when someone told him his hair was too long. Bobby got into a fight with the guy and Bobby was beaten to death. Bobby had played on the classic "White Trash" studio LP and on the live "Roadwork" LP recorded on tour in 1972. Edgar was so upset about Bobby's death that he disbanded White Trash and later formed "The Edgar Winter Group".
Keep Playin' That Rock 'N' Roll by White Trash
Don't you know that I was sittin back in Texas
I was playing those rhythm and blues
And then I got a big offer
For more money than I could refuse
I had the chance to make it
Playing anything I wanted to play
But way back in my mind
You know I could hear the people say
Keep playing that rock and roll
Keep doing what you been told
Save your money up for when you get old
Got to keep playing that rock and roll
So I packed up and I made it up to New York
Where my brother was a great big star
Yeah he was doing funky music
Singing and playing guitar
Johnny was making the big time
Everything was going his way
But way back in my mind
You know I could hear the people say
Keep playing that rock and roll
Keep doing what you been told
Save your money up for when you get old
Got to keep playing that rock and roll
Don't you know that I've been doing lots of thinking
I've been trying hard to figure it out
But there's a certain kind of music, yeah
Got to make you jump and shout
Now you could call it commercial
If you want to be that way
But way back in my mind
You know I could hear the people say
Keep playing that rock and roll
Keep doing what you been told
Save your money up for when you get old
Got to keep playing that rock and roll
Oh you got to keep on playing
(You got to keep on playing)
Keep doing what you been told
Save your money up for when you get old
Got to keep playing that rock and roll
Rock and roll
Rock and roll
To satisfy my soul

July 22, 1986, Peter Gabriel has his only Number one hit with the song "Sledgehammer". The song is from Gabriel's 5th solo album called "So" which took three years to produce. The song was accompanied by an animated video which was played endlessly on MTV. Rolling Stone magazine named the video as the greatest music video of all time.
Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel
You could have a steam train
If you'd just lay down your tracks
You could have an aeroplane flying
If you bring your blue sky back
All you do is call me
Ill be anything you need
You could have a big dipper
Going up and down, all around the bends
You could have a bumper car, bumping
This amusement never ends
I want to be your sledgehammer
Why don't you call my name
Oh let me be your sledgehammer
This will be my testimony
Show me round your fruit cage
cos I will be your honey bee
Open up your fruit cage
Where the fruit is as sweet as can be
I want to be your sledgehammer
Why don't you call my name
You'd better call the sledgehammer
Put your mind at rest
I'm going to be-the sledgehammer
This can be my testimony
I'm your sledgehammer
Let there be no doubt about it
Sledge sledge sledgehammer
Ive kicked the habit
Shed my skin
This is the new stuff
I go dancing in, we go dancing in
Oh wont you show for me
And I will show for you
Show for me, I will show for you
Yea, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
I do mean you
Only you
You've been coming through
Going to build that power
Build, build up that power, hey
Ive been feeding the rhythm
Ive been feeding the rhythm
Going to feel that power, build in you
Come on, come on, help me do
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you
Ive been feeding the rhythm
Ive been feeding the rhythm
Its what were doing, doing
All day and night

July 21, 1975, On his 28th birthday while swimming in Malibu, Cat Stevens is swept out to sea by a rip tide. He feels himself beginning to drown and prays to God, "Oh God! If you save me, I'll work for you". A large wave then sweeps him back to shore. The very next day his brother David gives him a copy of the Qur'an for a birthday gift which Cat takes as a sign from God. He will later change his name to Yusef Islam after converting to the Muslim faith.
Jesus by Cat Stevens
They used to call him Jesus
Long time ago
Theyre still calling him Jesus
Dont you know
They crossed the wood and hanged him
A long time ago
They still misunderstand him
Those who dont know
And in the evening his love will lead the blind
In every secret corner there in your mind
They called him Gautama Buddha
Oh long time ago
He turned the world to order
Dont you know
He used to sit knowing
Oh long time ago
Where you and me were going
And in the evening his love will lead the blind

July 20, 2007, As I write this I am watching the Jewel concert they showed on PBS last night. I taped it while I was at work and I thought about it all night. I don't like idol worship and I don't believe in love but this woman moves me. She is one of the best folk singers I have ever heard and I have heard many. She is true and pure and beautiful. An angel among fools...
Amen by Jewel
You're mothers' child
but night lays you down
hair aflame, wile look in your eye
Naked belly to the ground
A forest fire
Nibbles at your veins
Crawls up your arm
runs away with your mind
And burns dry thoughts like leaves
Amen
Eyes stare up
but somethings in the way
In the Bible only angels have wings
And the rest must wait to be saved
A dry tongue
Screams at the sky
But the wind just breathes words in
As a strange bird tries to fly
Amen
Pieces of us die everyday
As though our flesh were hell
Such injustice,
as children we are told
That from God we fell.
Where are my angels?
Where's my golden one?
Where's my hope
now that my heroes have gone?
Some are being beaten
Some are being born.
And some can't tell the difference
anymore
Amen
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

July 12, 1996, Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlain was charged with possession of heroin. The night before Jimmy and Jonathan Melvoin (keyboard player) had gotten drunk and shot up in a New York hotel room. When Chamberlain woke up Melvoin was dead from a overdose of heroin and alcohol. About a week later Jimmy was kicked out of the band and Billy Corgan said in a press release "Today, we are sorry to tell our friends and fans that we have decided to sever our relationship with our friend and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. This may come as a shock to some, to others not, but to us it's devastating. For nine years we have battled with Jimmy's struggles with the insidious disease of drug and alcohol addiction. We have decided to carry on without him and we wish him the best". One year later Chamberlin had pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct, avoiding over a year in jail. The Smashing Pumpkins had paid Melvoin's widow $10.000 because of a law suit she had filed claiming the Pumpkins had contributed to Jonathan's death by failing to make sure he stayed off drugs.

Rebel Girl by Bikini Kill
That girl thinks she's the queen of the neighborhood
She's got the hottest dyke in town
That girl she holds her head up so high
I think I wanna be her best friend
Rebel Girl, Rebel Girl
Rebel Girl you are the queen of my world
Rebel Girl, Rebel Girl
I think I wanna take you home
I wanna try on your clothes
When she walks, the revolutions coming
In her hips, there's revolution
When she talks, I hear the revolution
In her kiss, I taste the revolution
Rebel Girl, Rebel Girl
Rebel Girl you are the queen of my world
Rebel Girl, Rebel Girl
I know I wanna take you home
I wanna try on your clothes
That girl thinks she's the queen of the neighborhood
I got news for you, she IS!
They say she's a slut, but I know
She is my best friend
Rebel Girl, Rebel Girl
Rebel Girl you are the queen of my world
Rebel Girl, Rebel Girl
I think I wanna take you home
I wanna try on your clothes
Love you like a sister always
Soul sister, Rebel Girl
Come and be my best friend,
Really Rebel Girl
I really like you,
I really wanna be your best friend.
Be my Rebel Girl

This day in music history.

July 3, 1971, In a small apartment in Paris Pamela and Jim Morrison shot up some heroin. Jim decided to take a bath and Pamela decided to go shopping. Just before she left Jim asked Pamela to give him another injection, she did. When she returned from shopping she found Jim still in the tub and dead. There have been many stories told about how he actually died, even Pamela changed her account several times before her own overdose but this is the one I believe. He was buried in France without a ceremony and every year on the anniversary of his death thousands of people gather at his grave site, the inscription on his stone reads (in Greek) "He was faithful to his demons". Jim once said "I wouldn't mind dying in a plane crash. It'd be a good way to go. I don't want to die in my sleep, or of old age, or OD... I want to feel what it's like. I want to taste it, hear it, smell it. Death is only going to happen to you once; I don't want to miss it."
When The Music's Over by The Doors
Yeah, c'mon
When the music's over
When the music's over, yeah,
When the music's over
Turn out the lights, Turn out the lights
Turn out the lights, yeah
When the music's over
Turn out the lights
For the music is your special friend
Dance on fire as it intends
Music is your only friend
Until the end
Cancel my subscription to the Resurrection
Send my credentials to the House of Detention
I got some friends inside
The face in the mirror won't stop
The girl in the window won't drop
A feast of friends,
"Alive!" she cried
Waitin' for me, Outside!
Before I sink, Into the big sleep
I want to hear, I want to hear
The scream of the butterfly
Come back, baby, Back into my arm
We're gettin' tired of hangin' around
Waitin' around with our heads to the ground
I hear a very gentle sound,
Very near yet very far
Very soft, yeah, very clear,
Come today, come today
What have they done to the earth?
What have they done to our fair sister?
Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her
Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn
And tied her with fences and dragged her down
I hear a very gentle sound
With your ear down to the ground
We want the world and we want it...Now,
Now?, Now!
Persian night, babe, See the light, babe
Save us!, Jesus!, Save us!
So when the music's over
When the music's over, yeah
When the music's over
Turn out the lights
Well the music is your special friend
Dance on fire as it intends
Music is your only friend
Until the end

This day in music history.

July 2, 1962, Jimi Hendrix was discharged from the 101st Airborne Paratroopers. Jimi had joined the military at the age of 18 after having been busted for steeling a car. He was given a choice between spending two years in prison or joining the army. Jimi always said he was discharged because he broke his ankle during a parachute jump. Recently released Army documents state that he was discharged because he "slept on the job", had "little regard for regulations", and was once "apprehended masturbating" in the latrine. It goes on to say that Hendrix was a "habitual offender" and had "homosexual tendencies". Jimi was discharged without honors but avoided going to Vietnam.
Machine Gun by Jimi Hendrix
Machine gun
Tearing my body all apart
Machine gun, yeah
Tearing my body all apart
Evil man make me kill ya
Evil man make you kill me
Evil man make me kill you
Even though were only families apart
Well I pick up my axe and fight like a bomber
(you know what I mean)
Hey! and your bullets keep knocking me down
Hey, I pick up my axe and fight like a bomber now
Yeah, but you still blast me down to the ground
The same way you shoot me down, baby
Youll be going just the same
Three times the pain,
And your own self to blame
Hey, machine gun
I aint afraid of your mess no more, babe
I aint afraid no more
After a while, your,
your cheap talk dont even cause me pain,
So let your bullets fly like rain
cause I know all the time youre wrong baby
And youll be going just the same
Yeah, machine gun
Tearing my family apart
Yeah, yeah, alright
Tearing my family apart
dont you shoot him down
hes bout to leave here
dont you shoot him down
hes got to stay here
he aint going nowhere
hes been shot down to the ground
oh where he cant survive, no, no
Yeah, thats what we dont wanna hear anymore,
alright?
no bullets
At least here, huh huh
no guns, no bombs
Huh huh
no nothin, just lets all live and live
you know, instead of killin
May this be Love or just
Confusion born out of
Frustration wracked feelings of not
Being able to make true physical love
to the universal gypsy queen
True, free expressed music
Darling guitar please
Rest.
amen

This day in music history.

July 1, 1981, Rushton Moreve of Steppenwolf dies in an auto wreck at age 35. Born John Russell Morgane in 1948 he became bass player for Steppenwolf after answering an ad posted on the wall of a music store. The group's biggest hit is "Born to Be Wild," which reached number 2 in 1968. One of their other biggest hits "Magic Carpet Ride" was co-written by Rushton and John Kay, the song would hit number three.
Magic Carpet Ride
I like to dream yes, yes,
right between my sound machine
On a cloud of sound I drift in the night
Any place it goes is right
Goes far, flies near, to the stars away from here
Well, you don't know what we can find
Why don't you come with me little girl
On a magic carpet ride
You don't know what we can see
Why don't you tell your dreams to me
Fantasy will set you free
Close your eyes girl
Look inside girl
Let the sound take you away
Last night I held Aladdin's lamp
And so I wished that I could stay
Before the thing could answer me
Well, someone came and took the lamp away
I looked around, a lousy candle's all I found
Well, you don't know what we can find
Why don't you come with me little girl
On a magic carpet ride
Well, you don't know what we can see
Why don't you tell your dreams to me
Fantasy will set you free
Close your eyes girl
Look inside girl
Let the sound take you away
