This day in music history.

September 30, 1967, Van Morrison's "Brown-Eyed Girl" peaks on the singles chart at number 10. The song is from Vans first solo album, (Blowin' Your Mind!) after leaving the band THEM in 1966. The song was originally titled "Brown-Skinned Girl". Brown Eyed Girl was banned from many radio stations because of the lines "playing our nude games" and "making love in the green grass". The song has been copied by such bands as Barenaked Ladies, Bruce Springsteen, Green Day, Indigo Girls and the Sex Pistols. I believe this is one of the greatest pop songs ever made, it is almost perfect and Van is a fucking genius.
Brown eyed Girl by Van Morrison
Hey, where did we go
Days when the rains came
Down in the hollow
Playing our nude games
Laughing and a-running
hey, hey,
Skipping and a-jumping
In the misty morning fog with
our hearts a-thumping
And you, my brown-eyed girl,
You, my brown-eyed girl.
Whatever happened
To days so slow
Going down to the old mine
with a

Transistor radio.
Standing in the sunlight laughing
Hide behind a rainbow's wall,
Slipping and a-sliding
All along the waterfall
With you, my brown-eyed girl,
You, my brown-eyed girl.
Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah
Just like that
Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah
La dee dah.
So hard to find my way
Now that I'm all on my own.
I saw you just the other day,
My, how you have grown!
Cast my memory back there,
Lord,
Sometime I'm overcome thinking about it
Making love in the green grass
Behind the stadium
With you,
my brown-eyed girl,
You, my brown-eyed girl.
Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah..

September 29, 1976, During his 41st birthday party Jerry Lee Lewis got drunk and stoned, pulled out his .357 magnum hand gun and tried to shoot a beer bottle. Instead of shooting the bottle Jerry shot his friend and bass player, Norman (Butch) Owens. Owens is hit twice in the chest but survives. Lewis is charged with shooting a firearm within the city limits. Jerry later said "Just cause I accidentally shot my friend at my birthday party don't mean I'm a red neck".

September 28, 1991, Miles Davis dies of pneumonia, respiratory failure and stroke in Santa Monica, Calf. He was 65 years old. He is considered the greatest trumpeter ever. Miles was a composer, and band leader, he invented his own styles of jazz, cool jazz and free jazz. His mother (Cleota Mae) was a music teacher and she started Miles on the trumpet at the age of 12. At the age of 18, Miles traveled to New York to study at the Julliard School of Music. Shortly after his arrival he met Charlie Parker and started to play local gigs with his band. By 1945 he quit school for a full-time career as a jazz musician. He would go on to play with some of the greatest musicians in the world and influenced every jazz musician since. Miles once said "My future starts when I wake up every morning... Every day I find something creative to do with my life."

September 27, 1972, Rory Storm (aged 32) and his mother got drunk and then took an overdose of sleeping pills. They were found dead the next day. They did not leave a note, Rory's father had recently died. Rory was the leader of "Rory Storm and the Hurricanes", Ringo Starr had played drums with Storm before joining The Beatles. The Hurricanes were one of the most popular acts on the Liverpool club scene during the 60s. However their attempt at a recording career was not successful, Rory never had a hit song, he actually only recorded a handful of songs and they were all re-makes of old rock classics.

September 26, 1981, The Go-Go's hit the album charts with their first album "Beauty and the Beat". The LP would make it to number one and stayed there for 6 weeks. It would eventually go double platinum. They had two top ten hits off beauty And The Beat, "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got The Beat."
Our Lips Are Sealed
Can you hear them They talk about us
Telling lies Well that's no surprise
Can you see them See right through them
They have no shield No secrets to reveal
It doesn't matter what they say
In the jealous games people play
Our lips are sealed Careless talk
Through paper walls
We can't stop them
Only laugh at them
Spreading rumors So far from true
Dragged up from the underworld
Just like some precious pearl
It doesn't matter what they say
In the jealous games people play
Our lips are sealed
Pay no mind to what they say
It doesn't matter anyway
Our lips are sealed
There's a weapon
We must use In our defense
Silence
When you look at them
Look right through them
That's when they'll disappear
That's when you'll be feared
Hush, my darling Don't you cry
Quiet, angel
Forget their lies

He hits his head on some equipment while he was falling and suffered severe brain damage. Jackie lapses into a coma where he spent the next 8 years until his death in 1984. At the time of the heart attack Wilson was singing "Lonely Teardrops"
Lonely Teardrops
Shooby Doo Wop Wop Wop
Shooby Doo Wop Wop Wop
Shooby Doo Wop Wop Wop
My Heart Is cryin',
cryin'
Lonely Teardrops
My pillows never dry off
Lonely Teardrops
Come Home, Come Home
Just Say You Will, Say You Will
Say You Will
Hey, Hey
My Heart Is Fine, Fine
Lonely Teardrops
My pillows never dry off
Lonely Teardrops
Come Home, Come Home
Just Say You Will, Say You Will
Say You Will
Hey, Hey
Just Give Me Another Chance
For our Romance
Come On And Tell Me
That One Day You'll Return
Cause Everyday That You've Been Gone Away
You'll Know Why My Heart Does Nothing But Burn
Lonely Teardrops
My pillows never dry off
Lonely Teardrops
Come Home, Come Home
Just Say You Will, Say You Will...

September 24, 1968, "Hey Jude" makes it to number one on the US pop charts. It will stay at number one for nine weeks and become the second biggest hit The Beatles ever had. The song was written by Paul and although it was originally written for the White Album it was released as a single. The original version was seven minutes, eleven seconds long, it was shortened for US radio.
Hey Jude by The Beatles
Hey Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.
Hey Jude, don't be afraid
You were made to go out and get her
The minute you let her under your skin,
Then you begin to make it better
And anytime you feel the pain,
hey Jude, refrain,
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders
For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder
Hey Jude, don't let me down
You have found her, now go and get her
Remember to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better
So let it out and let it in, hey Jude, begin
You're waiting for someone to perform with
And don't you know that it's just you,
hey Jude, you'll do
The movement you need is on your shoulder
Hey Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her under your skin,
Then you'll begin to make it
Better better better better better better,
oohNa na na nananana, nananana, hey Jude...
Yeah, yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Ju- Jude-y Jude-y Jude-y Jude-y Jude-y oow-wow

September 20, 1973, Jim Croce and Maury Muehleisen were killed when their twin engine plane hit a tree on take off in Louisiana. They were on their way to play a concert in Sherman, Texas. The two men had been playing together since 1970 and they died one day before releasing Jims third album, "I Got A Name", it would be his biggest success with three hit singles "I Got A Name", "Workin' At The Car Wash Blues" and "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song." After his death several of his older songs became hits as well including "Time in a Bottle," which went all the way to number one.
Time In A Bottle by Jim Croce
If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that Id like to do
Is to save every day
Till eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you
If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
Id save every day like a treasure and then,
Again, I would spend them with you
But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
Ive looked around enough to know
That your the one I want to go
Through time with
If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty
Except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you
But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That your the one I want to go

September 19, 1981, The Rolling Stones album 'Tattoo You' goes to number one. It would stay there for nine weeks. The album had several hits including one of the Stones biggest hits ever "Start Me UP". This is one of my all time favorite albums, I especially like the second side which is all mellow songs including one of my favorite Stone's songs "Waiting On A Friend".
Waiting On A Friend by The Rolling Stones
Watching girls go passing by
It aint the latest thing
Im just standing in a doorway
Im just trying to make some sense
all of these girls go passing by
The tales they tell of men
Im not waiting on a lady
Im just waiting on a friend
A smile relieves a heart that grieves
Remember what I said
Im not waiting on a lady
Im just waiting on a friend
Im just waiting on a friend
Dont need a whore
I dont need no booze
Dont need a virgin grace
But I need someone I can cry to
I need someone to protect
Making love and breaking hearts
It is a game for you
But Im not waiting on a lady
Im just waiting on a friend

Break On Through by The Doors
You know the day destroys the night
Night divides the day
Try to run
Try to hide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side,
yeah
We chased our pleasures here
Dug our treasures there
But can you still recall
The time we cried
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Yeah!
C'mon, yeah
Everybody loves my baby
Everybody loves my baby
She get
She get
She get
She get
HIGH
I found an island in your arms
Country in your eyes
Arms that chain us
Eyes that lie
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through,
oww!
Oh,
yeah!
Made the scene
Week to week
Day to day
Hour to hour
The gate is straight
Deep and wide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through...

September 14, 1968, Roy Orbison's house in Tennessee burnt down, two of his three young sons, Roy Jr and Anthony died in the fire. Orbison was on tour in the UK at the time of the accident. Roy's wife (Claudette) died in a motorcycle accident two years earlier.
In Dreams by Roy Orbison
A candy-colored clown they call the sandman
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper
"Go to sleep. Everything is all right."
I close my eyes, Then I drift away Into the magic night.
I softly say
A silent prayer
Like dreamers do.
Then I fall asleep to dream My dreams of you.
In dreams I walk with you. In dreams I talk to you.
In dreams you're mine. All of the time
we're together In dreams,
In dreams.
But just before the dawn,

I awake and find you gone.
I can't help it, I can't help it, if I cry.
I remember that you said goodbye.
It's too bad that all these things,

Can only happen in my dreams
Only in dreams
In beautiful dreams.

September 12, 1970, James Taylor released the single," Fire and Rain." The song was from Taylors second LP titled "Sweet Baby James". The album features Carole King on piano. "Fire And Rain" was written while James was institutionalized for depression and heroin addiction. The "Suzanne" mentioned in the lyrics to "Fire and Rain" was Suzanne Schnerr. She was a good friend of Taylors whom he had met while he was a teenager in New York while performing as part of a group called The Flying Machine. She committed suicide. Taylor later explained "Fire and Rain" has three verses. The first verse is about my reaction to the death of a friend. The second verse is about my arrival in this country with a monkey on my back, and there Jesus is an expression of my desperation in trying to get through the time when my body was aching and the time was at hand when I had to do it ... And the third verse of that song refers to my recuperation in Austin Riggs which lasted about five months."
Fire And Rain by James Taylor
Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone
Susanne the plans they made put an end to you
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to send it to
I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Won't you look down upon me, Jesus
You've got to help me make a stand
You've just got to see me through another day
My body's aching and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Been walking my mind to an easy time
my back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it'll turn your head around
Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line
to talk about things to come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you, baby, one more time again, now
Thought I'd see you one more time again ...

Peter was actually Lobbans friend and had helped him find work after a long jail sentence and had allowed him to stay at his house for a period of time. The three came in demanding money and when Tosh told them that he did not have any they shot him. Then they shot the other six people that were in the house, four of them died. In a interview Peter gave the year that he died he said "Vampires don't come out and bite your neck anymore. They cause...Something destructive to happen that blood will spill and those invisible vampires will get their meals" . Peter was an original member of Bob Marleys band The Wailers he also had a very successful solo carrier and he was awarded the Grammy for Best Reggae Performance in 1987 for the album "No Nuclear War".

September 9, 1996, Bill Monroe, the father of bluegrass, died in a nursing home in Springfield, Tenn. He was 84 years old at the time of his death, he was being treated following a stroke a few months earlier. Not only did Bill invent and name "Bluegrass" he was also the greatest mandolin player that ever lived and sang with a beautiful tenor voice. His band, The Bluegrass Boys had an ever changing line up over the years, including Jimmy Martin, Rudy Lyle, Merle Taylor, Charlie Cline, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. Although Monroe toured relentlessly, performing hundreds of shows a year, he almost never gave interviews and would rarely perform on television. Bill was recognized by the United States Senate in 1986 for his contribution to American culture. His most famous songs include "Blue Moon of Kentucky," "Scotland" and "When The Golden Leaves Begin To Fall." Bill was once asked if he had any advice for young musicians, he said "Practice every time you get a chance."
Angels, Rock Me To Sleep by Bill Monroe And The Bluegrass Boys
My heart is sad my soul is weary
While sailing oe'r life's rugged plain
The clouds are dark the day is dreary
It seems Angels rock me to sleep in the cradle of love
Bear me over the deep to heaven above
When the shadows shall fall and the savior shall call
Angels rock me to sleep in the cradle of love
There is no earthly friend to guide me
No one to call to heaven's goal
But Christ the savior stands beside me
To cheer and comfort my poor soul
At last the harbor I am nearing
I see the lights along the shore
I hear my friends and loved ones cheering
I'll soon be safe for ever more

September 8, 1978, Keith Moon died of a overdose of heminevrin. The drug had been given to him to help him stop drinking. The official cause of death was ruled to be the result of "accidental misadventure". I find it very ironic that the thing that was supposed to save him is what killed him. I have always wondered how long Moon would have lived if he had just kept drinking. Let that be a lesson to all you kids out there, You Might As Well Just Stay Drunk. LOL Another irony is the last Who album was released just days after his death and he is pictured on the cover sitting on a chair that has a sign on it that says "Not to be taken away".
Imagine a Man by The Who
Imagine a man
Not a child of any revolt
But a plain man tied up in life
Imagine the sand
Running out as he struts
Parading and fading, ignoring his wife
Imagine a road
So long looking backwards
You can't see where it really began
Imagine a load
So large and so smooth
That against it a man is an ant
Then you will see the end
You will see the end
Imagine events
That occur everyday
Like a shooting or raping or a simple act of deceit
Imagine a fence
Around you as high as prevention
Casting shadows, you can't see your feet
Imagine a girl
With long, flowing hair
And the body of chalky perfection and truth
Imagine a past
Where you wish you had lived
Full of heroes and villians and fools
And you will see the end
You will see the end
And you will see the end
You will see the end
Oh yeah
Imagine a man
Not a child of any revolt
But a man of today feeling new
Imagine a soul
So old it it is broken
And you know your invention is you
And you will see the end
You will see the end
You will see the end
You will see the end
Oh yeah

September 7, 2003, Warren Zevon died at his home in Los Angeles, California. Zevon died from an inoperable form of lung cancer called mesothelioma. After being diagnosed with the disease (in 2002) and told he only had months to live, Warren decided not to have any treatment and dedicated the end of his life to recording a final album. The album was called "The Wind" and has guest appearances from Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Jackson Browne, Timothy B. Schmit, Joe Walsh, David Lindley, Billy Bob Thornton, Emmylou Harris and Tom Petty. In all Warren recorded over 15 albums. He is best known for the song "Werewolves Of London". One of Warrens last interviews was with David letterman. While discussing the subject of death he said "Enjoy every sandwich".
Keep Me In Your Heart by Warren Zevon
Shadows are falling and I'm running out of breath
Keep me in your heart for awhile
If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less
Keep me in your heart for awhile
When you get up in the morning and you see that crazy sun
Keep me in your heart for awhile
There's a train leaving nightly called when all is said and done
Keep me in your heart for awhile
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for awhile
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for awhile
Sometimes when you're doing simple things
around the house
Maybe you'll think of me and smile
You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on
your blouse
Keep me in your heart for awhile
Hold me in your thoughts, take me to your dreams
Touch me as I fall into view
When the winter comes keep the fires lit
And I will be right next to you
Engine driver's headed north to Pleasant Stream
Keep me in your heart for awhile
These wheels keep turning but they're running out
of steam
Keep me in your heart for awhile
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for awhile
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for awhile
Keep me in your heart for awhile

September 4, 1962, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr begin recording together for the first time at EMI's St. John Studio. They practiced 6 songs but recorded only two. The first was a song called "How Do You Do It" which George Martin was forcing them to record. It had been written by two friends of George and he thought it was better then any thing the Beatles had come up with themselves. They also record "Love Me Do" although George Martin was unhappy with Ringos drumming so he had The Beatles return the next day to re-record the track using session drummer Andy White. After arguing with the boys George Martin decides to give in and let them release "Love Me Do" for their first single and "How Do You Do It " is never released.

September 1, 1972, The O-Jays received a gold record for the song "Back Stabbers". It was the first hit for the group from Canton, OH. The O-Jays would have 9 more hits, including "Love Train", " I Love Music", "Use ta Be My Girl", "For the Love of Money" and "Put Your Hands Together"
Back Stabbers
What they do!
They smile in your face
All the time they want to take your place
The back stabbers
(back stabbers)
All you fellows who have someone and you really care,
yeah, yeah
Then it's all of you fellows who better beware,
yeah yeah
Somebody's out to get your lady
A few of your buddies they sure look shady
Blades are long, clenched tight in their fist
Aimin' straight at your back
And I don't think they'll miss
(What they do!)
(They smile in your face)
All the time they want to take your place
The back stabbers
(back stabbers)
I keep gettin' all these visits from my friends,
yeah,
They come to my house again and again and again and again
yeah
So are they there to see my woman
I don't even be home but they just keep on comin'
What can I do to get on the right track
I wish they'd take some of these knives off my back
(They smile in your face)
All the time they want to take your place
The back stabbers
(back stabbers)
Low down... dirty...
(What they do!)
(They smile in your face)
Smiling faces... smiling faces sometimes tell lies
(Back stabbers)
They smile in your face
I don't need... low down,
dirty bastards
(Back stabbers)
