January 31, 1876, All Native American Indians were ordered to move into reservations.
Indian Reservation by John D. Loudermilk
They took the whole Cherokee nation
Put us on this reservation
Took away our ways of life
The tomahawk and the bow and knife
Took away our native tongue
And taught their English to our young
And all the beads we made by hand
Are nowadays made in Japan
Cherokee people, Cherokee tribe
So proud to live, so proud to die
They took the whole Indian nation
Locked us on this reservation
Though I wear a shirt and tie
I’m still part redman deep inside
Cherokee people, Cherokee tribe
So proud to live, so proud to die
But maybe someday when they learn
Cherokee nation will return,
will return, will return, will return, will return

January 30, 1956, Billy Lee Riley is in the (Sun) recording studio recording his biggest hit "Red Hot." Playing piano on this track is Jerry Lee Lewis. Along with Roland Janes and J.M. Van Eaton, Billy Lee was a member of the Sun session band and played on many of the classic sun releases. Billy played harmonica, guitar, bass, and drums.
Red Hot
My gal is red hot
Your gal aint doodly squat
Yeah, my gal is red hot
Your gal ain't doodly squat
Well, she ain't got no money
But man, she's a-really got a lot
Well, I got a gal, six feet four
Sleeps in the kitchen with her feet out the door,
but
Well, she walks all night, talks all day
She's the kinda woman who'll have her way,
but
Well, she's the kinda woman who louds around
Spreadin' my business all over town,
but
Well, she's a one man's woman,
that's what I like
but
I wish she wasn't gonna change her mind everynight

January 29, 1994, Mary Wilson (Supremes) crashed her jeep just outside of Los Angeles. Her 14-year old son (Rafi) was killed in the accident. Beside being an original Supreme Mary had a successful solo career and also penned a couple best selling books including "Dreamgirl, My Life as a Supreme".
A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes by The Supremes
A dream is a wish your heart makes
When you're fast asleep
In dreams you will lose your heartaches
Whatever you wish for, you keep
Have faith in your dreams and someday
Your rainbow will come smiling through
No matter how your heart is grieving
If you keep on believing
The dream that you wish will come true
No matter how your heart is grieving
If you keep on believing
The dream that you wish will come true
So dream...

January 28, 1978, While on tour promoting his "Double Live Gonzo" record, Ted Nugent is asked by a fan to autograph the man's arm with a bowie knife. Ted (the sledge) obliges.
Cat Scratch Fever by Ted Nugent
Well I don't know where they come from But they sure do come
I hope they comin' for me
And I don't know how they do it But they sure do it good
I hope they doin' it for free
They give me cat scratch fever
Cat scratch fever
The first time that I got it I was just ten years old
I got it from some kitty next door
I went to see the Dr. and He gave me the cure
I think I got it some more
They give me cat scratch fever
Cat scratch fever
It's nothin dangerous I feel no pain
I've got to ch-ch-change
You know you got it when you're going insane
It makes a grown man cry
I make the pussy purr with The stroke of my hand
They know they gettin' it from me
They know just where to go
When they need their lovin man
They know I do it for free
They give me cat scratch fever
Cat scratch fever...

January 27, 1972, "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" goes gold. It would be the first gold record for The New Seekers and the first commercial jingle to go gold. The song was written as the music for Coca-Cola commercials. On the commercials the song is sung by a racially diverse group standing on a hillside and the song is credited to The Hillside Singers. The New Seekers released a version without the Coke references and it went to number 1 in the UK and number 7 in the US. The New Seekers also had hits with the songs "Look What They've Done To My Song, Ma", "Beautiful People" and "The Nickel Song".
I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing
I'd like to build the world a home
And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees and snow-white turtle doves
I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I'd like to hold it in my arms and keep it company
I'd like to see the world for once
All standing hand in hand
And hear them echo through the hills
"Ah, peace throughout the land"...

January 25, 1999, Paul McCartney bashes British radio and TV stations after they refuse to play the song "The Light Comes From Within," it was the last song by his late wife Linda. It was banned for what was deemed offensive language.
The Light Comes From Within by Linda McCartney
You say I'm lazy
You say I don't fit
Takes one to know one
you make me sick
You say I'm simple
Say I'm a hick
Your fucking no one
you stupid dick
Oppression wont win
The light comes from within
I need a sense of cause
Wanna smell the flowers
You need complete control
You wanna build more towers
You try to change me if you could
I see the trees
you saw the wood
You say I'm different
You say we don't click
I say your crazy
you make me sick
I say your greedy

because you scheme
You say I'm foolish because I dream
Oppression wont win
The light comes from within
I need a sense of cause
Wanna smell the flowers
You need complete control
You wanna build more towers
The light comes from within

January 24, 1970, John Lennon and Yoko Ono shaved their heads to commemorate the start of "Year One for Peace".
Power to the People by John Lennon's/Plastic Ono Band
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on
Say you want a revolution
We better get on right away
Well you get on your feet
And out on the street
Singing power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on
A million workers working for nothing
You better give em what they really own
We got to put you down
When we come into town
Singing power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on
I gotta ask you comrades and brothers
How do you treat you own woman back home
She got to be herself
So she can free herself
Singing power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on
Now, now, now, now
Oh well,
power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on
Yeah, power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on

January 23, 1965, "Downtown" went to number one on the US pop chart. It made Petula Clark the first UK female singer to have a number one hit on the US singles chart since Vera Lynn in 1952. Curiously it only made number two in the UK.
Downtown by Petula Clark
When you're alone and life is making you lonely
You can always go - downtown
When you've got worries, all the noise and the hurry
Seems to help, I know - downtown
Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city
Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty
How can you lose?
The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
So go downtown, things'll be great when you're
Downtown - no finer place, for sure
Downtown - everything's waiting for you
Don't hang around and let your problems surround you
There are movie shows - downtown
Maybe you know some little places to go to
Where they never close - downtown
Just listen to the rhythm of a gentle bossa nova
You'll be dancing with him too before the night is over
Happy again
The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
So go downtown, where all the lights are bright
Downtown - waiting for you tonight
Downtown - you're gonna be all right now
And you may find somebody kind to help and understand you
Someone who is just like you and needs a gentle hand to
Guide them along
So maybe I'll see you there
We can forget all our troubles, forget all our cares
So go downtown, things'll be great when you're
Downtown - don't wait a minute more
Downtown
everything's waiting for you
Downtown...

Alan Parsons

I saw Alan Parsons live on Friday night. It was great. I saw him at the same theater a couple years ago and that was great also. He didn't play much of "Tales Of Mystery And Imagination" (my personal fave) but that was okay because what he played kicked ass. They had a nice light show, great sound and the band fucking rocked. I took a few pictures with my cheap digital and this one turned out (good enough to post anyway). I had first row in the balcony and that was the perfect seat for this show, as a rule I like to sit as close to the band as possible but it was nice to see the full stage and light show for a change. If Parsons comes to your town I highly recommend seeing him.

To One In Paradise by Alan Parsons
If I could see the sky above
And my mind could be set free
As wild white horses reached the shore
I'd stand alone and oversee
And if the bush before me burns
Should I turn my eyes away
And still the voices I can hear
As clear to me as the light of day
I believed in my dreams
Nothing could change my mind
Now I know what they mean
How could I be so blind
Cold sands of time
(Winds that blow as cold as ice Sounds that come in the night)
Shall hide what is left of me
I've been through times when no one cared
I've seen clouds in empty skies
When one kind word meant more to me
Than all the love in Paradise
I believed in my dreams
Nothing could change my mind
Till I found what they mean
Nothing can save me now

I'm back.

I would like to address the "dead horse" controversy that is swirling around my home town of Sheboygan. It all started when a local paper ran this picture and it was picked up by the associated press and actually became an international story (can anyone say - slow news day)

We are once again getting a bad name just because we like to sit on dead horses. What's the big deal?
Believe me, the horse doesn't mind and what else are we going to do on a Saturday night? If you think this is bad you should see one of our funerals. lol
