This day in music history.

July 17, 1967, John Coltrane (The Trane) died after having checked into the Huntington Hospital the day before complaining of severe abdominal pains. The cause of death was liver cancer which he choose not to have treated with conventional medical methods. He died at the age of 40, it is believed that Coltrane's excessive alcohol and heroin abuse throughout his life contributed to his illness. Coltrane is considered to be one of the greatest jazz saxophonists of all time.
