This day in music history.

December 15, 1944, An airplane carrying bandleader Glenn Miller, disappears over the English Channel en route from Bedford, England, to Paris. Alton Glenn Miller was born in Clarinda, Iowa on March 1, 1904. In 1915, Miller's family moved to Grant City, Missouri where he was given his first trombone and then played in the town band. He attended the University of Colorado but quit after only one year. He toured with several orchestras and ended up in Los Angeles where he landed a spot in Ben Pollack's group, a band that included a guy named Benny Goodman. In 1928 he moved to New York City, he soon sent for, and married his college sweetheart, Helen Burger, For the next three years he earned his living as a free-lance trombonist and arranger. Miller developed a distinctive sound in which a high-pitched clarinet carried the melody, doubled by a saxophone section playing an octave lower, and he used that sound to produce a series of hits that remain definitive examples of swing music. He became one of the top selling musicians in the world. On October 7, 1942, Miller reported for induction into the Army and was immediately assigned to the Army Specialist Corps. He ultimately organized the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. In late 1943 he and the band were shipped out to England. He was preparing to go on to Paris when the plane on which he was traveling disappeared over the English Channel and he died at age 40.
Glenn once said "There is no rest, there must be no rest for a fellow when he is successful. He has got to keep right on going... And don’t think that I am the product of luck or breaks or anything like that. I have worked hard ever since I came out of the University of Colorado. I have played the trombone in so many bands, I can’t count them all."
Among his many hits were “Moonlight Serenade” (his theme song), “In the Mood,” and “Tuxedo Junction.”
In The Mood by Glenn Miller and Andy Razaf
Who's the lovin' daddy with the beautiful eyes
What a pair o' lips, I'd like to try 'em for size
I'll just tell him, "Baby, won't you swing it with me"
Hope he tells me maybe, what a wing it will be
So, I said politely "Darlin' may I intrude"
He said "Don't keep me waitin' when I'm in the mood"
First I held him lightly and we started to dance
Then I held him tightly what a dreamy romance
And I said "Hey, baby, it's a quarter to three
There's a mess of moonlight, won't-cha share it with me"
"Well" he answered "Baby, don't-cha know that it's rude
To keep my two lips waitin' when they're in the mood"
In the mood, that's what he told me
In the mood, and when he told me
In the mood, my heart was skippin
'It didn't take me long to say
"I'm in the mood now"
In the mood for all his kissin'
In the mood his crazy lovin'
In the mood what I was missin'
It didn't take me long to say
"I'm in the mood now"
"Who's the lovin' daddy with the beautiful eyes
What a pair o' lips, I'd like to try 'em for size
I'll just tell him, "Baby, won't you swing it with me"
Hope he tells me maybe, what a wing it will be
