December 18, 1984, Madonna has her first No. 1 hit, "Like a Virgin". It tops the singles chart for six weeks. Her daughter Lourdes is named for the site (Lourdes, France) where Bernadette Soubirous saw visions of the Virgin Mary in 1858.
