This day in music history.

June 24, 1999, Eric Clapton held an auction at Christie's in New York of 100 of his guitars. All profits went to his drug rehab clinic, the Crossroads Centre in Antigua. Fetching the largest bid was Claptons 1956 Fender Stratocaster named Brownie which he used in 1970 to record the album “Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs”. Brownie is also pictured on the back of the album cover. It can also be seen on the cover of his first solo album, “Eric Clapton". The guitar brought a high bid of $497,500 making it the most expensive guitar ever. This record fell two years later when one of Jerry Garcia’s guitars was sold at auction for $957,500.
