This day in music history.

May 31, 2000, Tito Puente (King of the Mambo, Sultan of Salsa) dies as a result of complications following 12 hours of open-heart surgery, he is 77. Born Ernesto Antonio Puente, Jr, he served in the Navy for three years during world war 2 and earned a Presidential Commendation. Tito studied at Julliard and the the New York School of Music. He was known for his virtuoso timbales playing and he also played vibes, piano, congas, bongos, and saxophone. He recorded over 100 albums and received 5 Grammys.
