This day in music history.

October 16, 1859, John Brown leads 20 men (including 5 black men) in a raid on the federal arsenal, Harper's Ferry, Va. John was convinced he was commissioned by God to put an end to slavery in America. Brown and his men were trapped by Robert E. Lee and his troops. After a gun fight in which 10 of Browns men were killed Brown was captured and later (after a sensational trial) he was found guilty of treason against Virginia and was hanged at Charlestown.
John Brown's body
John Brown's body lies a-moldering in the grave,
John Brown's body lies a-moldering in the grave,
But his soul goes marching on.
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
His soul goes marching on
He's gone to be a soldier in the Army of the Lord,
He's gone to be a soldier in the Army of the Lord,
His soul goes marching on
He captured Harper's Ferry with his nineteen men so true
He frightened old Virginia till she trembled
through and through
They hung him for a traitor, themselves the traitor crew
His soul is marching on
John Brown's knapsack is strapped upon his back,
John Brown's knapsack is strapped upon his back,
His soul goes marching on.
John Brown died that the slaves might be free,
John Brown died that the slaves might be free,
His soul goes marching on.
The stars above in Heaven now are looking kindly down,
The stars above in Heaven now are looking kindly down,
On the grave of old John Brown
His soul goes marching on
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
His soul goes marching on
