May 17, 1971, The rock musical Godspell, opened at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York City. The show went on to become the third longest-running off-Broadway production, it played for 2,124 performances. The song "Day by Day" would make it to the top fifteen on the charts. The musical is based on the Gospel of Saint Matthew with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.
