This day in music history.

January 5, 1998, Sonny Bono (born Sonny Salvatore Bono in 1935) dies from head injuries after hitting a tree while skiing at the Heavenly Ski Resort near South Lake Tahoe. He was 62 years old. Sonny met Cher (Cherilyn Sarkisian) when she was 16 years old, Phil Spector teamed them together as a duo (Caesar and Cleo), they changed their name to Sonny And Cher and had their first big hit in 1965, "I Got You Babe". Although Sonny and Cher divorced in 1975 Cher gave a tearful eulogy at Bono's funeral. The epitaph on Bono's headstone reads: "And The Beat Goes On". Later in life Sonny was elected into the House of Representatives in California's 44th Congressional District. He was re-elected to the position in 1996. Bono also sat on the House Judiciary Committee.
The Beat Goes On by Sonny Bono
The beat goes on, the beat goes on.
Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain.
La de da de de, la de da de da.
Charleston was once the rage, uh huh.
History has turned the page, uh huh.
The miniskirt's the current thing, uh huh.
Tennyboppers our newborn king, uh huh.
And the beat goes on, the beat goes on.
Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain.
La de da de de, la de da de da.
The grocery store's the supermart, uh huh.
Little girls still break their hearts, uh huh.
And men still keep on marching off to war.
Electrically they keep a baseball score.
And the beat goes on, the beat goes on.
Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain.
La de da de de, la de da de da.
Grandmas sit in chairs and reminisce
Boys keep chasing girls to get a kiss.
The cars keep going faster all the time.
Bums still cry 'Hey buddy, have you got a dime?'
And the beat goes on, the beat goes on.
Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain.
La de da de de, la de da de da
