This day in music history.
November 23, 1889, The first jukebox was placed in service in the Palais Royal saloon in San Francisco, California. At the time the word Juke or Juke joint was slang for whore house. The unit, developed by Louis Glass, contained an Edison tinfoil phonograph with four listening tubes. Five cents bought you a few minutes of music. The contraption took in $1,000 in six months.
