This day in music history.

October 4, 1970, Janis Joplin took an overdose of heroin in a Hollywood hotel room, She was 27. Janis was inspired by blues greats Bessie Smith and Leadbelly. In 1966, she left Texas for San Francisco, where she became vocalist with 'Big Brother and The Holding Company'. Their 'Cheap Thrills' album released in 1968, sold over a million copies and a few months later she quit the band. In 1969 she released her solo debut album 'I Got Dem Ol' Kosmic Blues Again, Mama'. Soon after it's release she formed a new backing group, The Full Tilt Boogie Band, and was in the middle of recording an album when she died. Some of these songs were the basis of her posthumous 'Pearl' album, which topped the US chart and was the greatest success of her career, the song "Me and Bobby McGee" hit number one in 1971.
Mercedes Benz by Janis Joplin
Oh Lord, wont you buy me a Mercedes Benz?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, wont you buy me a Mercedes Benz?
Oh Lord, wont you buy me a color TV?
Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery each day until three,
So oh Lord, wont you buy me a color TV?
Oh Lord, wont you buy me a night on the town?
Im counting on you, Lord, please don't let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round,
Oh Lord, wont you buy me a night on the town?
Everybody!
Oh Lord, wont you buy me a Mercedes Benz?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends,
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So oh Lord, wont you buy me a Mercedes Benz?
that's it!
