September 16, 1977, Marc Bolan dies in an auto accident in London. Bolan's first band was called Tyrannosaurus Rex. It was him on acoustic guitar and a bongo player. Bolan claimed to have spent time with a wizard in the south of France, who gave him secret knowledge. After putting together his electric band he shortened the name to T-Rex. His first big hit was "Ride A White Swan" in 1970. His biggest hit was "Get It On" in 1972, which hit number one on the British charts and become a Top Ten hit in the U.S., where the song was retitled "Bang A Gong (Get It On)"
