This day in music history.

August 19, 1972, NBC broadcast the pilot episode of "The Midnight Special". John Denver was the show's first host. Wolfman Jack was the show’s announcer. The first episodes guests were Cass Elliot, Argent, Linda Ronstadt, The Everly Brothers, David Clayton-Thomas, War. Helen Reddy, The Isley Brothers and Harry Chapin.
The Midnight Special proved to be a ratings success. At the height of the Disco craze, the show was changed to look like a Disco with a platform dance floor. Wolfman Jack was placed behind an elevated D.J. booth. But as the disco craze waned, the disco set was gone and in early 1981, NBC replaced The Midnight Special with SCTV.
