This day in music history.

August 15, 1969, The most famous concert in rock history opened. The Woodstock Music and Art Fair would last for three days on Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, New York. Over 400,000 hippies took acid, smoked pot, and had sex, oh yeah there were some bands that played as well, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Sly and the Family Stone, the Who, the Grateful Dead, Joan Baez, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, Canned Heat, Crosby, Still Nash & Young, CCR, The Band, Arlo Guthrie, Johnny Winter, Ritchie Havens and the Jefferson Airplane to name a few.
The promoter expected at most 50.000 people but so many showed up for the concert (without tickets) the promoter (Michael Lang) was forced to call it a free festival and open the gates to all. The concert was called Woodstock because that is were it was supposed to be held but at the last minute the town of Woodstock cancelled the show for fear it would bring in a bad element. Not wanting to have to reprint everything they decided to not change the name.
During the concert there were three deaths, two births and many overdoses. A successful film of the concert and a soundtrack that would sell millions would recoup everyone's money and would help propel some of the bands into super stardom.
Some of DLAKs favorite Woodstock moments were Wavey Graveys stage announcements ("don't take the brown acid"), The fact that Jimi Hendrix played the last day after most of the crowd had left, The hippies got mad at a guy selling hamburgers because they thought he was charging to much (the fucking capitalist pig) and burned his hamburger stand down, Abbie Hoffman jumping on stage during the Who's set and Pete Townshend spearing him in the back with his guitar, knocking him back off the stage and our favorite Woodstock moment Just before the concert started while they were still building the stage Michael Lang brought a huge bag of cocaine to turn all the roadies on but when he set it down on the stage a tarp above it let loose with the rain water it was holding and washed the big bag of coke away as everyone one watched in horror.
