April 29, 1976, After playing a gig in Memphis Bruce Springsteen tries to climb over the fence at Elvis Presley's Graceland estate in an attempt to see Presley. A guard took him to be another crank fan and apprehended him. Springsteen had appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek and even though he showed security the covers he is escorted off the premises by guards.
Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out by the Boss
Tear drops on the city
Bad Scooter searching for his groove
Seem like the whole world walking pretty
And you can't find the room to move
Well everybody better move over, that's all
I'm running on the bad side
And I got my back to the wall
Tenth Avenue freeze-out,
Tenth Avenue freeze-out
I'm stranded in the jungle
Taking all the heat they was giving
The night is dark but the sidewalk's bright
And lined with the light of the living
From a tenement window a transistor blasts
Turn around the corner things got real quiet real fast
She hit me with a Tenth Avenue freeze-out
Tenth Avenue freeze-out
And I'm all alone, I'm all alone
And kid you better get the picture
And I'm on my own, I'm on my own
And I can't go home
When the change was made uptown
And the Big Man joined the band
From the coastline to the city
All the little pretties raise their hands
I'm gonna sit back right easy and laugh
When Scooter and the Big Man bust this city in half
With a Tenth Avenue freeze-out,
Tenth Avenue freeze-out
Tenth Avenue freeze-out...

April 28, 1999, A study is released that finds that 27% of the most popular songs from 1996 and 1997 contained a clear reference to either alcohol or illicit drugs. On this same day Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. When told of the honor Tom said "Huh?, hey man, got a light?"
Mary Janes Last Dance by The Heartbreakers
She grew up in an Indiana town
Had a good lookin mom who never was around
But she grew up tall and she grew up right
With them Indiana boys on a Indiana night
Well she moved down here at the age of 18
She blew the boys away, it was more than they'd seen
I was introduced and we both started groovin
I said, I dig you baby but I got to keep movin...on,
keep movin on
Last dance with mary jane

One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin in and im
Tired of this town again
Well I don't know but I've been told
You never slow down, you never grow old
Im tired of screwing up, Im tired of goin down
Im tired of myself, Im tired of this town
Oh my my, oh hell yes
Honey put on that party dress
Buy me a drink, sing me a song,
Take me as I come cause I cant stay long
Last dance with mary jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin in and im
Tired of this town again
there's pidgeons down in market square
she's standing in her underwear
Lookin down from a hotel room
Nightfall will be comin soon
Oh my my, oh hell yes
you've got to put on that party dress
It was too cold to cry when I woke up alone
I hit my last number, I walked to the road
Last dance with mary jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin in and im
Tired of this town again

April 27, 1976, Customs officers on a train at the Russian/Polish Border detained David Bowie, after Nazi books and mementoes were found in his luggage. David is delayed for several hours. In the end Bowie talked the officials into believing the material was for research on a film about Nazi official Joseph Goebbels. This incident happened just around the time Bowie became embroiled in a controversy caused by his comments to Playboy magazine apparently praising Hitler and making the statement that "Britain is ready for a fascist leader. He referred to Hitler as "one of the first rock stars" and expressed admiration of Hitler's stage presence, comparing him to Mick Jagger. Bowie's statements were accompanied by some theatrics involving an open-top vintage Mercedes and what some claimed was a Nazi salute staged outside.
Adolph Played Guitar by David Bowie
Adolph played guitar, jamming good with Hermann Göring
And The Nazis from Mars.
He played it left hand But made it too far
Became the special man, then we were Adolph's band
Adolph really sang, screwed up eyes
and screwed down hairdo
Like some cat from Japan,
he could kill 'em by smiling
He could leave 'em to hang
He came on so loaded man,
well hung and snow white tan.
So where were the Nazis
while the fly tried to break our balls
Just the The Beer Hall Putsch to guide us,
So we bitched about his fans
and should we crush his sweet hands?
Oh Ooh oh

Adolph played for time,
jiving us that we were voodoo
The kids were just crass, he was the nazz-e
With God given ass
He took it all too far but boy could he play guitar
Making love with his ego
Adolph sucked up into his mind
Like a leper messiah
When the kids said kill the man
I had to break up the band.
Oh yeah Ooooooo
Adolph played guitar ...

April 26, 1969, The Original Cast of 'Hair' started a 13-week run at No.1 on the US album chart. Composed by Galt MacDermot the show challenged many of the norms held by Western society. It caused controversy when it was first staged because the cast was completely naked. The Broadway show and the album were attacked as being subversive and anti American. Although there was much bad press, songs such as 'Aquarius', 'Good Morning Starshine', 'Let The Sunshine In' and "Hair" became part of the American pop culture and everyone from Frank Sinatra to Jimi Hendrix was singing the songs. The LP also won a Grammy for best score from an original cast album. The Cowsills had a #2 hit with the song Hair.
Hair
She asks me why, I'm a hairy guy.
I'm hairy noon and night,
hair that's a fright.
I'm hairy high and low,
don't ask me why,
cause he don't know.
It's not for lack of bread,
like the Grateful Dead.
Darlin'
Give me a head with hair,
long beautiful hair.

Shining, gleaming,
streaming, flaxen, waxen.
Give me down to there hair,
shoulder length or longer
Here baby, there, momma,
ev'rywhere, daddy, daddy.
hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair.
Flow it, show it,
long as God can grow in my hair.
Let it fly in the breeze and get caught in the trees,
give a home to the fleas in my hair.
A home for fleas (yeah)
a hive for the buzzing bees (yeah),
a nest for birds,
there ain't no words for the beauty,
the splendor, the wonder of my:
Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it,
long as God can grow in my hair
I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy,
snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty, oily,
greasy, fleecy, shining, gleaming,
streaming, flaxen, waxen,
knotted, polka dotted,
twisted, beaded, braided, powdered,
flowered and confettied,
bangled, tangled, spangled and spahettied.
Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair.
Flow it, show it,
long as God can grow it, my hair
They'll be ga-ga at the go-go
when they see me in my toga,
my toga made of blond, brilliant
biblical hair.
My hair like Jesus wore it,
Halleluja I adore it,
Halleluja Mary loved her son,
why don't my mother love me?
Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair
Folw it, show it
long as God can grow it, my hair
Hair, hair, hair, hair, hairHair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
long as God can grow in my hair

Unhappy Girl by The Doors
Unhappy girl
Left all alone
Playing solitaire
Playing warden to your soul
You are locked in a prison
Of your own devise
And you can't believe
What it does to me
To see you
Crying
Unhappy girl
Tear your web away
Saw thru all your bars
Melt your cell today
You are caught in a prison
Of your own devise
Unhappy girl
Fly fast away
Don't miss your chance
To swim in mystery
You are dying in a prison
Of your own device

Jack And Diane by John Cougar
Little ditty, about Jack and Diane
2 American kids growin up in the heartland.
Jacky goin' be a football star

Diane's debutante backseat of Jacky's car
Suckin' on chili dog outside the tastey freeze.
Diane sittin' on Jacky's lap,
got his hands between her knees
Jacky say, "Hey Diane, let's run off 'hind a shady tree,
Dribble off those Bobby Brooks, let me do what I please.
Jacky says, oh yeah
life goes on Long after the thrill of livin is gone
Say uh, oh yeah
life goes on Long after the thrill of livin is gone.
They walk on.
Jacky sits back, collects his thoughts for the moment
Scratches his head and does his best James Dean.
Well then there Diane, we oughtta run off to the city.
Diane says "Baby, you ain't missin' nothing"
Jacky say uh, Oh yeah
life goes on Long after the thrill of livin is gone
Oh yeah they say life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone
He walks on.
Gonna let it rock, let it roll
Let the bible belt, come and save my soul
Hold on to 16 as long as you can
Changes come around real soon, make us women and men.
Oh yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone
Oh yeah, they say life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone
Little ditty, about Jack and Diane
Two American kids doin' best they can

April 23, 1975, Peter Ham, singer, songwriter with Badfinger committed suicide by hanging himself. The note he left read "Anne, (his girlfriend) I love you. Blair, (his unborn daughter) I love you. I will not be allowed to love and trust everybody. This is better. P.S. Stan Polley (his manager) is a soulless bastard. I will take him with me."
His suicide was followed eight years later by the suicide of his friend and fellow band member Tom Evens (He also hanged himself). Together, Ham and Evans wrote the classic hit "Without You". "Without You" would also be a hit for Harry Nilson and Mariah Carey.
Without You by Badfinger
Well, I can't forget this evening
And your face when you were leaving
But I guess that's just the way the story goes
You always smile, but in your eyes your sorrow shows
Yes, it shows
Well, I can't forget tomorrow
When I think of all my sorrow
I had you there, but then I let you go
And now it's only fair that I should let you know
What you should know
I can't live, if living is without you
I can't live, I can't give anymore
I can't live, if living is without you
I can't live, I can't give anymore
Well, I can't forget this evening
And your face when you were leaving
But I guess that's just the way the story goes
You always smile, but in your eyes your sorrow shows
Yes, it shows
I can't live, if living is without you

Hey Bartender by Floyd Dixon
I went balling the other night
I started drinking and got real tight
I blew each and all my friends
I felt so good I had to blow it again
I said hey bartender
Hey man, looka here
A draw one, draw two, draw three, four glasses of beer
Well I saw a chick sitting on the end
I said baby can’t we be friends
You’re looking sweet as you can be
Well come on down and drink with me
I said hey bartender
Hey man looka here
Draw one, draw two, draw three, four glasses of beer
Well we was having so much fun
I didn’t know it was half past one
I turned around to have one more
I looked at the clock and it was half past four
Hey bartender
Hey man look a here
A draw one, draw two, draw three, four glasses of beer
Well jukebox girl is everything
All the cats began to sing
I heard somebody called and said
Last round for alcohol
I said hey bartender
Hey bartender
Hey bartender
Hey bartender
Draw one, two, three, four glasses of beer

and I try and I try and I try and I try.
I cant get no, I cant get no.
When Im drivin in my car
And that man comes on the radio
And hes tellin me more and more
About some useless information
Supposed to fire my imagination.
I cant get no, oh no no no.
Hey hey hey, thats what I say.
I cant get no satisfaction,
I cant get no satisfaction.
and I try and I try and I try and I try.

And that man comes on to tell me
How white my shirts can be.
Well he cant be a man cause he doesnt smoke

And Im tryin to make some girl
Who tells me baby better come back later next week
cause you see Im on losing streak.

April 20, 1991, Steve Marriott dies in a fire at his home in Essex, England. Age 44. He was a guitarist and lead singer for the rock bands Small Faces and Humble Pie. The accident was caused by his falling asleep while intoxicated and leaving a cigarette burning.
As Safe As Yesterday Is by Humble Pie
Can I face tomorrow
With the news you bring me
My soul feels cold like ice
A pinprick makes no pain
Hear me, listen, help me
I felt our thing change
From love to something else
How can it plague my mind
A pinprick makes no pain
Hear me, listen, help me
I shall find myself
But I must have the time
To sow the seeds of something new
Farmer plough the field
Harvest all you can
A corn field smells so sweet
A pinprick makes no pain
Hear me, listen, help me
But to follow the weaver of dreams
Behind the sun that knows, it seems that
I am forsworn - a naked troubadour
I sit at court and I sing
To the Princess of Beauty and Light
She favors me though I'm merely
A minstrel of the night
There on my right
Sits the King with his clowns
He pays to laugh
While his queen lives on downs
And the smile on his brow is the crown
Morning bird sing, fill my ears
With the joy of our sorrow unmasked
Lend me your wings for the sunrays of dawn
Are here to last
I take my leave, as I leave I must take
All I have seen in my dream -
then I wake
And it is as safe as yesterday is

April 19, 1986, The Prince song "Kiss" went to number one, where it would stay for two weeks. Number two on the charts was "Manic Monday" by the Bangles. "Manic Monday" was credited to a person named Christopher. It was later revealed that Christopher was actually Prince.
Manic Monday
Six o'clock already I was just in the middle of a dream
I was kissin' Valentino By a crystal blue Italian stream
But I can't be late 'Cause then I guess I just won't get paid
These are the days When you wish your bed was already made
It's just another manic Monday I wish it was Sunday
'Cause that's my funday My I don't have to runday
It's just another manic Monday
Have to catch an early train Got to be to work by nine
And if I had an air-o-plane I still couldn't make it on time
'Cause it takes me so long Just to figure out what I'm gonna wear
Blame it on the train But the boss is already there
All of the nights Why did my lover have to pick last night
To get down
Doesn't it matter That I have to feed the both of us
Employment's down He tells me in his bedroom voice
C'mon honey, let's go make some noise
Time it goes so fast When you're having fun

April 18, 1973, John Lennon and Yoko do an interview during which they discuss the new country they were forming. It would be a country with no laws, boundaries, or passports, only people. They called the new land Nutopia. Nutopia's national anthem was silence ( It is on the Mind Games LP) its flag was a white handkerchief.
Mind Games by John Lennon
We're playing those mind games together,
Pushing barriers, planting seeds,
Playing the mind guerilla,
Chanting the Mantra
peace on earth,
We all been playing mind games forever,
Some kinda druid dudes lifting the veil.
Doing the mind guerilla,
Some call it magic, the search for the grail,
Love is the answer and you know that for sure,
Love is a flower you got to let it,
you got to let it grow,
So keep on playing those mind games together,
Faith in the future outta the now,
You just can't beat on those mind guerillas,
Absolute elsewhere in the stones of your mind,
Yeah we're playing those mind games forever,
Projecting our images in space and in time,
Yes is the answer and you know that for sure,
Yes is surrender you got to let it,
you got to let it go,
So keep on playing those mind games together,
Doing the ritual dance in the sun,
Millions of mind guerrillas,
Putting their soul power to the karmic wheel,
Keep on playing those mind games forever,
Raising the spirit of peace and love, not war,
(I want you to make love, not war, I know you've heard it before
)

April 17, 1998, Linda McCartney died from breast cancer, at the age of 56. McCartney died at her family's ranch outside of Tucson, Arizona. Her husband, Paul McCartney, said that the success of their long marriage was because they "adored each other." Linda, formerly a magazine photographer, had been a champion for animal rights, and was a vegetarian long before it was fashionable. She and Paul supported many animal rights issues, and she launched a successful line of vegetarian frozen food. She was also a member of Pauls band "Wings". They had three children together, and Linda had a child from a previous marriage. Her husband and children were at her side when she died. Linda once said "If slaughterhouses had glass walls the whole world would be vegetarian".
Maybe I'm Amazed by Wings.
Maybe I'm amazed at the way you love me all the time
Maybe I'm afraid of the way I love you
Maybe I'm amazed at the way you pulled me out of time
You hung me on a line
Maybe I'm amazed at the way I really need ya
Maybe I'm a man
Maybe I'm a lonely man who's in the middle of something
That he doesn't really understand
Maybe I'm a man, maybe you're the only woman
Who could ever help me
Baby would you help me to understand
Maybe I'm a man
and you're the only woman
Who could ever help me
Baby would you help me to understand
Maybe I'm amazed at the way you're with me all the time
Maybe I'm afraid of the way I need ya
Maybe I'm amazed at the way you help me sing my song
You right me when I'm wrong
Maybe I'm amazed at the way I really need ya
Won't you help me to understand
Maybe I'm a man
Maybe I'm a lonely man who's in the middle of something
That he doesn't really understand
Maybe I'm a man, and you're the only woman

April 15, 1989, Roger Waters watches the TV as students in Beijing launched a series of pro-democracy protests upon the death of former Communist Party leader Hu Yaobang. The protests culminated in the Tiananmen Square massacre.
Watching TV by Roger Waters
I've been watching
In Tiananmen Square
Lost my baby there
My yellow rose
In her bloodstained clothes
She was a short order pastry chef
In a Dim Sum dive on the Yangtze tideway
She had shiny hair
She was the daughter of an engineer
Won't you shed a tear
For my yellow rose
My yellow rose
In her bloodstained clothes
She had perfect breasts
She had high hopes
She had almond eyes
She had yellow thighs
She was a student of philosophy
Won't you grieve with me
For my yellow rose
Shed a tear
For her bloodstained clothes...
So get out your pistols
Get out your stones
Get out your knives
Cut them to the bone
They are the lackeys of the grocer's machine
They built the dark satanic mills
That manufacture hell on earth
They bought the front row seats on Calvary
They are irrelevant to me
But I grieve for my sister
People of China
Do not forget do not forget
The children who died for you
Long live the Republic
Did we do anything after this
I've a feeling we did
We were watching TV
Watching TV
We were watching TV
Watching TV
She wore a white bandanna that said
Freedom now
She thought the Great Wall of China
Would come tumbling down
She was a student
Her father was an engineer
Won't you shed a tear
For my yellow rose
My yellow rose
In her bloodstained clothes
Her grandpa fought old Chiang Kai-shek
That no-good low-down dirty rat
Who used to order his troops
To fire on the women and children
Imagine that imagine that
And in the spring of '48
Mao Tse-tung got quite irate
And he kicked that old dictator Chiang
Out of the state of China
Chiang Kai-shek came down in Formosa
And they armed the island of Quemoy
And the shells were flying across the China Sea
And they turned Formosa into a shoe factory
Called Taiwan
And she is different from Cro-Magnon man
She's different from Anne Boleyn
She is different from the Rosenbergs
And from the unknown Jew
She is different from the unknown Nicaraguan
Half superstar half victim
She's a victor star conceptually new
And she is different from the Dodo
And from the Kankanbono
She is different from the Aztec
And from the Cherokee
She's everybody's sister
She's symbolic of our failure
She's the one in fifty million
Who can help us to be free
Because she died on TV
And I grieve for my sister

April 14, 1912, The dance band on the Titanic played as the ship went down. At one point band leader Wallace H. Hartley told his musicians to save them selves, to a man they all stayed by his side until the end. All eight of these men died when the Titanic sank. The last song they played was "Nearer My God to Thee." Almost two weeks later Hartleys body was discovered in the Atlantic still wearing his band uniform and his music box still strapped to his body.
Nearer My God To Thee
Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
Even though it be a cross that raiseth me,
still all my song shall be,
nearer, my God, to thee; nearer, my God, to thee,
nearer to thee!
Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
darkness be over me, my rest a stone
yet in my dreams I'd be nearer, my God, to thee
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
There let the way appear, steps unto heaven
all that thou sendest me, in mercy given
angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to thee
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
Then, with my waking thoughts bright with thy praise,
out of my stony griefs Bethel
I'll raise; so by my woes to be nearer, my God, to thee
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
Or if, on joyful wing cleaving the sky, sun, moon, and stars forgot,
upward I fly, still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to thee
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!

April 13, 1742, The first performance of George Frideric Handel's "Messiah" took place in Dublin. Handel played the harpsichord and Matthew Dubourg conducted the orchestra. The oratorio was hailed as a musical triumph. Messiah is divided into three parts representing Christ's birth, death, and resurrection. It was originally written for Easter performances but Handel himself conducted Messiah many times, often altering it to suit the needs of the moment. It is now more closely associated with Christmas. Handel wrote the complete work in 24 days, It is said that while Handel was writing the Messiah, his valet would often find him weeping silently at his desk.
Chorus: Halleujah by Handel
HALLELUJAH!
for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord,
and of His Christ: and He shall reign for ever and ever.
KING OF KINGS, and LORD OF LORDS,
HALLELUJAH!
DLAK note: If you want to read the whole thing go here,

April 11, 1977, Alice Cooper plays to an audience of 40,000 in Sydney, Australia, it is the largest crowd to attend a rock concert in the country's history. After the show Alice is placed under house arrest at his hotel until he posts a bond for $59,632. It's the sum a local promoter claims to have paid Cooper for an 1975 Australia tour he never made.
For Veronica's Sake by Alice Cooper
I got my name and number
I got my bed assigned
I got a dog in the city pound
That I left behind
I'm strapped down and wild-eyed
She's locked up in a pen
She needs somebody to feed her
And I'm her only friend
So for Veronica's sake I gotta get out of here
Yeah for Veronica's sake, she can get pretty weird
Yeah for Veronica's sake I gotta get myself out of here
We both been put in cages
We got our shots and tags
I got my sweaty fist to shake
She's got her tail to wag
She has to bark and whimper
While I could scream and shout
The clock above the psycho ward
Says time is running out
So for Veronica's sake I gotta get out of here
Yeah for Veronica's sake, she can get pretty weird
Yeah for Veronica's sake I gotta get myself out of here
And I can see her howling all night at the lonely moon
They're going to give her the gas if I don't get there soon
I gotta get there soon
For Veronica's sake I gotta get out of here
Yeah for Veronica's sake, she can get pretty weird

April 10, 1952, Kay Starr had a number one hit with the song "Wheel of Fortune." The song would be her biggest hit "Wheel Of Fortune" earned Kay her first gold record, it stayed at number one for 10 weeks and went on to become the number two top selling single of 1952.
Wheel Of Fortune
The wheel of fortune Goes spinning around
Will the arrow point my way?
Will this be my day?
Oh, wheel of fortune Please don't pass me by
Let me know the magic of A kiss and a sigh
While the wheel is spinning, spinning, spinning
I'll not dream of winning fortune or fame
While the wheel is turning, turning, turning
I'll be yearning, yearning For love's precious flame
Oh, wheel of fortune I'm hoping somehow
If you ever smile on me
Please let it be now
While the wheel is spinning, spinning, spinning
I'll not dream of winning fortune or fame
While the wheel is turning, turning, turning
I'll be yearning, yearning For love's precious flame
Oh, wheel of fortune I'm hoping somehow
If you ever smile on me
Please let it be now

April 9, 1976, Phil Ochs commits suicide he was 35 years old at the time. Born Philip David Ochs he moved from Ohio to New York in the early '60s. He started writing topical, left-leaning protest songs, and soon became a gifted Folk singer. After releasing several successful albums he developed a severe alcohol addiction and suffered psychological problems. In a mysterious mugging incident, while on tour in Africa, his voice was permanently damaged. Afflicted with serious depression, he hanged himself at his sister's home. Harry Chapin wrote the song, "The Parade's Still Passing By", about Ochs. Phil once said "The fortunes of the entire world may well ride on the ability of young Americans to face the responsibilities of an old America gone mad."
Crucifixion by Phil Ochs
And the night comes again to the circle studded sky
The stars settle slowly, in loneliness they lie
Planets are paralyzed, mountains are amazed
But they all glow brighter from the brilliance of the blaze
With the speed of insanity, then he dies
In the green fields a turnin', a baby is born
His cries crease the wind and mingle with the morn
An assault upon the order, the changing of the guard
Chosen for a challenge that is hopelessly hard
And the only single sound is the sighing of the stars
But to the silence and distance they are sworn
So dance dance dance
Teach us to be true
Come dance dance dance
'Cause we love you
Images of innocence charge him to go on
But the decadence of destiny is looking for a pawn
To a nightmare of knowledge he opens up the gate
And a blinding revelation is laid upon his plate
That beneath the greatest love is a hurricane of hate
And God help the critic of the dawn.
So he stands on the sea and shouts to the shore,
But the louder that he screams the longer he's ignored
For the wine of oblivion is drunk to the dregs
And the merchants of the masses almost have to be begged'
Till the giant is aware, someone's pulling at his leg,
And someone is tapping at the door.
Then his message gathers meaning and it spreads across the land
The rewarding of his pain is the following of the man
But ignorance is everywhere and people have their way
Success is an enemy to the losers of the day
In the shadows of the churches, who knows what they pray
For blood is the language of the band.
The Spanish bulls are beaten; the crowd is soon beguiled,
The matador is beautiful, a symphony of style
Excitement is estatic, passion places bets
Gracefully he bows to ovations that he gets
But the hands that are applauding are slippery with sweat
And saliva is falling from their smiles
Then this overflow of life is crushed into a liar
The gentle soul is ripped apart and tossed into the fire.
First a smile of rejection at the nearness of the night
Truth becomes a tragedy limping from the light
All the heavens are horrified, they stagger from the sight
As the cross is trembling with desire.
They say they can't believe it, it's a sacrilegious shame
Now, who would want to hurt such a hero of the game?
But you know I predicted it; I knew he had to fall
How did it happen? I hope his suffering was small.
Tell me every detail, I've got to know it all,
And do you have a picture of the pain?
Time takes her toll and the memory fades
but his glory is broken, in the magic that he made.
Reality is ruined; it's the freeing from the fear
The drama is distorted, to what they want to hear
Swimming in their sorrow, in the twisting of a tear
As they wait for a new thrill parade.
The eyes of the rebel have been branded by the blind
To the safety of sterility, the threat has been refined
The child was created to the slaughterhouse he's led
So good to be alive when the eulogy is read
The climax of emotion, the worship of the dead
And the cycle of sacrifice unwinds.
And the night comes again to the circle studded sky
The stars settle slowly, in loneliness they lie'
Till the universe expodes as a falling star is raised
Planets are paralyzed, mountains are amazed
But they all glow brighter from the brilliance of the blaze
With the speed of insanity, then he died.

Bah-bah-bah-bah, bah-bah-bah-bah
Bah-bah-bah-bah. bah-bah-bah-bah, at the hop!
Well, you can rock it you can roll it
You can stop and you can stroll it at the hop
When the record starts spinnin'

You calypso when you chicken at the hop
Do the dance sensation that is sweepin' the nation at the hop
Ah, let's go to the hop
Let's go to the hop, (oh baby)
Let's go to the hop, (oh baby)
Let's go to the hop
Come on, let's go to the hop
Well, you can swing it you can groove it
You can really start to move it at the hop
Where the jockey is the smoothest
And the music is the coolest at the hop
All the cats and chicks can get their kicks at the hop
Let's go!

Let's go to the hop, (oh baby)
Let's go to the hop, (oh baby)
Let's go to the hop
Come on, let's go to the hop
Let's go!...

DLAK note: If you calypso while you do the chicken its called "Chilypso"

April 7, 1998, George Michael is arrested in a mens restroom in Beverly Hills for masturbating in public. Michael is sentenced to community service for the incident. Days later, he acknowledges his homosexuality on CNN to which the world said "No shit?"
Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go by WHAM
You put the boom-boom into my heart
You send my soul sky high when your lovin' starts
Jitterbug into my brain
Goes a bang-bang-bang 'til my feet do the same
But something's bugging you
Something ain't right
My best friend told me what you did last night

Left me sleepin' in my bed
I was dreaming, but I should have been with you instead.
Wake me up before you go-go

Don't leave me hanging on like a yo-yo
Wake me up before you go-go
I don't want to miss it when you hit that high
Wake me up before you go-go'
Cause I'm not plannin' on going solo
Wake me up before you go-go

Take me dancing tonight
I wanna hit that high
yeah, yeah
You take the grey skies out of my way
You make the sun shine brighter than Doris Day
Turned a bright spark into a flame
My beats per minute never been the same'
Cause you're my lady, I'm your fool
It makes me crazy when you act so cruel
Come on, baby, let's not fight
We'll go dancing, everything will be all right
Wake me up before you go-go...

April 6,1998, Wendy O Williams, former singer of The Plasmatics died from a self inflicted gunshot wound. Born Wendy Orlean Williams on May 28, 1949, Wendy had dropped out of school in the ninth grade. At the age of sixteen she hitch-hiked her way to Colorado where she earned money selling crocheted string bikinis. By 1978 she had moved to Florida and was regularly performing in live sex shows. She soon began appearing in pornographic films, among them 1979's "Candy Goes To Hollywood" which is famous for its "ping pong ball scene". Eventually Rod Swenson, also known as Captain Kink, recruited her to front his punk concept band, the Plasmatics, and became her maniger. Williams quickly became famous for her obscene behavior during their live shows. After being arrested several times Swenson and Williams moved to Storrs, Connecticut and Wendy retired from music. On a Tuesday Swenson returned home to find a package Wendy had left him, which included several suicide notes. He found her body in the adjacent woods, several nutshells were on a nearby rock where she had apparently been feeding some of the squirrels before she died. One of the suicide notes Wendy left read: "The act of taking my own life is not something I am doing without a lot of thought. I don't believe that people should take their own lives without deep and thoughtful reflection over a considerable period of time. I do believe strongly, however, that the right to do so is one of the most fundamental rights that anyone in a free society should have. For me much of the world makes no sense, but my feelings about what I am doing ring loud and clear to an inner ear and a place where there is no self, only calm. Love always, Wendy."
Legends Never Die by Wendy O' Williams
You were a god in the halls of time
You've seen them come and seen them go
But why can't you sleep at night?
Maybe it's the glare of the lights
Maybe it's something you'll never know
You heard the voice again last night
You're fooling yourself, this ain't no dream
Well maybe it's not too late
You can still feed the hand of fate
Just roll the dice and play the game
Oh, legends never die
They keep your memories alive
Legends never die
They keep a part of you inside
You know you're not the way you seem
You're not a puppet on a string
Maybe it's not too late
You could still feel the hand of fate
Just close your eyes and play the game
Legends never die,
Tuesday morning, New York Times
You passed away, you lost your mind
We all try to play the game
We all wanna taste the pain
We'd sell our souls if the price is right

Can’t Buy Me Love by The Beatles
Can’t buy me love...
I’ll buy you a diamond ring my friend if it makes you feel alright
I’ll get you anything my friend if it makes you feel alright’
cause I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love
I’ll give you all I got to give if you say you love me too
I may not have a lot to give but what I got I’ll give to you
I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love
Can’t buy me love, everybody tells me so
Can’t buy me love, no no no, no
Say you don’t need no diamond ring and I’ll be satisfied
Tell me that you want the kind of thing that money just can’t buy
I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love

April 3, 1979, Kate Bush kicked off the 28-date 'Tour Of Life' with her concert debut at Liverpool's Empire Theatre, England. Each 2 1/2 hour show, a mixture of music, dance and mime, was a complete sell-out. Kate Bush never toured again.
Blow away ( For bill ) by Kate Bush
One of the band told me last night That music is all that he's got in his life.
And where does it go? Surely not with his soul. Will all of his licks and his R'n'B
Blow away? Blow away Blow away
Our engineer had a different idea From people who nearly died but survived,
Feeling no fear of leaving their bodies here, And went to a room that was soon full of visitors.
Hello Minnie, Moony, Vicious, Vicious, Buddy Holly, Sandy Denny.
Please don't thump me, Don't bump me, Don't dump me back there.
Please don't thump me, Don't bump me, I want to stay here.

Dust to dust, blow to blow. Bolan and Moony are heading the show tonight.

April 2, 1987, Buddy Rich died at the age of 69 due to complications caused by a brain tumor. He was born Bernard Rich on September 30, 1917. Rich was billed as "the world's greatest drummer" and was known for his technique, power, speed and ability to improvise. He began playing drums in vauderville at 18 months, billed as Traps the Drum Wonder. By the time of his 11th birthday he was performing as a bandleader. He received no professional drum instruction ever. Over the years he worked with some of the all time greats including Tommy Dorsey, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Ventura, Louis Armstrong, Gene Krupa and Frank Sinatra who gave a touching eulogy at Rich's funeral. Gene Krupa once said "Rich was the greatest drummer ever to have drawn breath." Reportedly, on the day he died, prior to surgery when asked by a nurse if he was allergic to anything Buddy replied "Yes ... country music!"
DLAK note: I saw Buddy Rich live in about 1977, I was lucky enough to stand 10 feet from him for almost the entire show. I know its a very tricky business trying to prove who was the greatest whatever but if you could have seen that show I bet you would agree that he was the best ever.

April 1, 1984, Marvin Gaye was shot dead by his father during a violent argument at his parent's home in Los Angeles. Using a gun that Marvin himself had given him four months earlier, his father was later charged and found guilty and was sentenced to five years for voluntary manslaughter. It happened one day before Marvins forty-fifth birthday. Gaye's relatives claimed that he had purposely pushed his father to the edge so that he could have Marvin, Sr. kill him instead of having to commit suicide. Others say Marvin physically attacked his father for verbally abusing his mother and Gay Sr. responded by shooting his son to death.
God Is Love by Marvin Gaye
Oh don't go and talk about my father
God is my friend
Jesus is my friend
He made this world for us to live in,
and gave us everything
And all he asks of us is we give each other love.
Oh ya
Don't go and talk about my father
Cause God is my friend
Jesus is my friend
He loves us whether or not we know it
Just loves us,
oh ya
And He'll forgive all our sins
Forgive all our sins
And all He asks of us, is we give each other love.
Oh ya
Love your mother, she bore you
Love your father, he works for you
Love your sister, she's good to you
Love your brother, your brother
Don't go and talk about my father,
He's good to us,
God is my friend
Jesus is my friend
For when we call in Him for mercy,
Mercy Father
He'll be merciful, my friend
Oh, yes He will

All he asks of us,
I know,
is we give each other love,
Oh ya
