This day in music history.

November 30, 1943, The Nat King Cole trio recorded Straighten Up And Fly Right for Capitol Records. It was the first recording for the King Cole trio. Nat King Cole was born Nathaniel Adams Coles in 1920 in Montgomery, Alabama. At the age of four he had the only music teacher he would ever have. During the next 20 years he learned not only jazz and gospel, but classical as well, performing, as he said, "from Bach to Rachmaninoff". Cole was the first black jazz musician to have his own weekly radio show (1948-49). The King Cole Trio consisted of Nat on piano, Oscar Moore on guitar and Wesley Prince on bass (there was no drummer). Even after becoming one of the most popular singers in the world Nat told The Saturday Evening Post in 1954, "My voice is nothing to be proud of. It runs maybe two octaves in range. I guess it's the hoarse, breathy noise that some like."
Straighten Up And Fly Right by The King Cole Trio.
A buzzard took the monkey for a ride in the air
The monkey thought that everything was on the square
The buzzard tried to throw the monkey off his back
But the monkey grabbed his neck and said-- Now listen, Jack
Straighten up and fly right
Straighten up and fly right
Straighten up and fly right
Cool down, papa, don't you blow your top.
Ain't no use in divin' What's the use in jivin'
Straighten up and fly right
Cool down, papa, don't you blow your top.
The buzzard told the monkey "You're chokin' me
Release your hold and I'll set you free
The monkey looked the buzzard right dead in the eye and said
Your story's touching but it sounds like a lie
Straighten up and fly right
Straighten up and stay right
Straighten up and fly right
Cool down, papa, don't you blow your top.

November 29, 1964, "Ringo," becomes the No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit. The song is sung by Lorne Greene. Greene was the star of the NBC show "Bonanza". He was the second Canadian to have a No. 1 hit in the United States.
Ringo by Lorne Greene.
He lay face down in the desert sand
Clutching his six-gun in his hand
Shot from behind, I thought he was dead
But under his heart was an ounce of lead
But a spark still burned so I used my knife
And late that night I saved the life of Ringo
(Ringo... Ringo . . .)
I nursed him till the danger passed
The days went by, he mended fast
Then from dawn till setting sun
He practiced with that deadly gun
And hour on hour I watched in awe
No human being could match the draw of Ringo
(Ringo... Ringo... )
One day we rode the mountain crest
And I went east and he went west
I took to law and wore a star
While he spread terror near and far
With lead and blood he gained such fame
All throughout the West they feared the name of Ringo
(Ringo... Ringo... )
I knew someday I'd face the test
Which one of us would be the best
And sure enough the word came down
That he was holed up in the town
I left the posse out in the street
And I went in alone to meet Ringo
(Ringo... Ringo... )
They said my speed was next to none
But my lightning draw had just begun
When I heard a blast that stung my wrist
The gun went flying from my fist
And I was looking down the bore
Of the deadly .44 of Ringo
(Ringo... Ringo... )
They say that was the only time
That anyone had seen him smile
He slowly lowered his gun and then
He said to me "We're even, friend"
And so at last I understood
That there was still a spark of good in Ringo
(Ringo... Ringo... )
I blocked the path of his retreat
He turned and stepped into the street
A dozen guns spit fire and lead
A moment later, he lay dead
The town began to shout and cheer
Nowhere was there shed a tear for Ringo
(Ringo... Ringo... )
The story spread throughout the land
That I had beaten Ringo's hand
And it was just the years, they say
That made me put my guns away
But on his grave they can't explain
The tarnished star above the name of Ringo
(Ringo... Ringo... )

November 27, 1997, The funeral has taken place in Australia of the rock star, Michael Hutchence, who was found hanged in his hotel on Saturday. The coffin was covered in blue irises -- and a single tiger lily to represent Hutchence's baby daughter, who was named after the flower. The Australian singer, Nick Cave, also sang at the ceremony. A fan brought the funeral to a standstill when he tried to hang himself from a 20 ft high balcony. He stood on the balcony looking down at the congregation, and announced, "This is how he did it, Paula. This is how he died." Then he jumped off with a 4 foot black cord around a dog collar attached to his neck, however the man didn't die. He was removed by police and taken away to a psychiatric unit.
Disappear by INXS
Say I'm crying
I'm looking at what's on T.V
Pain and suffering
And the struggle to be free
It can't ever be denied and I
Never will ignore
But when I see you coming
I can take it all
You're so fine
Lose my mind
And the world seems to disappear
All the problems, all the fears
And the world seems to disappear
Say your mine
And give yourself to the
Feelings that you know
I'm needing
All that you can give me
All the things
That you do so well
Words are healing
Sweet anticipation
Making spells
As the shadows close in
Fall across all our yesterdays
You're so fine
Lose my mind
And the world seems to disappear
All the problems, all the fears
And the world seems to disappear
You're so fine
Lose my mind
And the world seems to disappear
All the problems, all the fears
And the world seems to disappear
Disappear, disappear, disappear, disappear, disappear,
disappear, disappear
Say if I could
Look into myself and reason
But I could never never see or
Make sense of the dealings
Turn around
Am I looking at salvation
Make me realize all that I am
You put the light inside this man
You're so fine
Lose my mind
And the world seems to disappear
All the problems, all the fears
And the world seems to disappear
You're so fine
Lose my mind
And the world seems to disappear
All the problems, all the fears
And the world seems to disappear
You're so fine
Lose my mind
And the world seems to disappear
All the problems, all the fears
And the world seems to disappear

The band was comprised of Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart , Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. Their first hit was "Donna" in 1972. That was followed by 5 more top ten hits. A while after the break up Stewart and Gouldman would put the band back together without the others and had two more hits, 1977's "The Things We Do For Love" and 1978's "Dreadlock Holiday".

November 25, 1998, Craig Marks (editor Spin magazine) was invited backstage to talk with Marilyn Manson after a concert at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. Upon arriving backstage Manson's bodyguards pinned him against a wall and hauled him up into the air. While he dangled in the air Manson taunted him, he said 'You know I can kill you, your family and everyone you know'. Marks is suing Manson, his music label and his two bodyguards for $24 million. Marks alleges he suffered muscle strain, neck and emotional pain and was treated at a hospital for tissue injury, contusions and internal bleeding. Marilyn alleges that Craig Marks is a cunt.

November 24, 1933, Bessie Smith makes her last recording " Give Me A Pigfoot".
Gimmie A Pigfoot by Bessie Smith.
Up in Harlem every Saturday night
When the highbrows get together its just so right
They all congregate at an all night hop
And what they do is Oo Bop Bee Dap
Oh Hannah Brown from way cross town
Gets full of coin and starts breaking 'em down
And at the break of day
You can hear ol' Hannah say
'Gimme a pigfoot and a bottle of beer.
Send me again. I don't care.
I feel just like I wanna clown.
Give the piano player a drink because he's bringing me down!
He's gotta rhyme, yeah! When he stomps his feet.
He sends me right off to sleep.
Check all your razors and your guns.
We gonna be arrested when the wagon comes.
I wanna pigfoot and a bottle of beer.
Send me cause I don't care.
Blame me cause I don't care.
Gimme a pigfoot and a bottle of beer.
Send me again, I don't care.
I feel just like I wanna clown.
Give the piano player a drink because he's bringing me down.
He's got rhyme, Yeah,
when he stomps his feet.
He sends me right off to sleep.
Check all your razors and your guns.
Do the Shim-Sham Shimmy 'til the rising sun
Give me a reaper and a gang of gin
Play me cause I'm in my sin
Blame me cause I'm full of gin.

November 22, 1997, Michael Hutchence, lead singer of INXS hung himself to death in his fifth floor suite at the Ritz- Carlton hotel in Sydney, Australia. Hutchence was born in Sydney, but was raised in Hong Kong. He began performing at the age of eight in a local toy store commercial. It was in Hong Kong that Michael sang in a folk group that played Peter, Paul and Mary songs. Finding himself back in Australia at the age of 17 he formed a band with Andrew Ferriss they teamed up with Andrews brothers Tim and Jon and friend Kirk Pengilly. The band changed it's name to INXS in 1980. They had some 30 top fifty hits with a couple number ones.
There has always been a question whether Michael's death was a suicide or not. According to the official coreners report, he thought 'It has to be considered. The deceased was found at 11.50am naked behind the door to his room. He had apparently hanged himself with his own belt and the buckle broke away and his body was found kneeling on the floor and facing the door. It has been suggested that the death resulted from an act of auto eroticism. However, there is no forensic or other evidence to substantiate this suggestion. I therefore, discount that manner of death."
Devil Inside by INXS
Here comes the woman
With the look in her eye
Raised on leather
With flesh on her mind
Words as weapons sharper than knives
Makes you wonder how the other half die
Other half die
Here come the man
With the look in his eye
Fed on nothing
But full of pride
Look at them go
Look at them kick
Makes you wonder how the other half live
The devil inside The devil inside
Every single one of us the devil inside
Here come the world
With the look in its eye
Future uncertain but certainly slight
Look at the faces
Listen to the bells
It's hard to believe we need a place called hell

Setting The Woods On Fire by Hank Williams
Comb your hair and paint and powder
You act proud and I’ll act prouder
You sing loud and I’ll sing louder
Tonight we’re setting the woods on fire
Your my gal and I’m your feller
Dress up in your frock of yeller
I’ll look swell but you’ll look sweller
Setting the woods on fire
We’ll take in all the honkey tonks
Tonihgt we’re having fun
We’ll show the folks a brand new dance
That never has been done
I don’t care who thinks we’re silly
You be daffy and I’ll be dilly
We’ll order up to bowls of chili
Setting the woods on fire
I’ll gas up my hot rod stocker
We’ll get hotter than a poker
You’ll be broke but I’ll be broker
Tonight we’re setting the woods on fire
We’ll sit close to one another
Up the one street and down the other
We’ll have a time o brother
Setting the woods on fire
We’ll put aside a little time
To fix a flat or two
My tires and tubes are doing fine
But the air is showing through
You clap hands and I’ll start bowing
We’ll do all the laws allowin’
Tomorrow I’ll be right back plowing
Setting the woods on fire

You Keep Me Hanging On by The Supremes
Set me free, why don't cha babe
Get out my life, why don't cha babe'
Cause you don't really love me
You just keep me hangin' on
You don't really need me
But you keep me hangin' on
Why do you keep a coming around
Playing with my heart?
Why don't you get out of my life
And let me make a new start?
Let me get over you
The way you've gotten over me
Set me free, why don't cha babe
Let me be, why don't cha babe'
Cause you don't really love me
You just keep me hangin' on
Now you don't really want me
You just keep me hangin' on
You say although we broke up
You still wanna be just friends
But how can we still be friends
When seeing you only breaks my heart again
And there ain't nothing I can do about it
Woo,
set me free, why don't cha babe
Woo,
get out my life, why don't cha babe
Set me free, why don't cha babe
Get out my life, why don't cha babe
You claim you still care for me
But your heart and soul needs to be free
Now that you've got your freedom
You wanna still hold on to me
You don't want me for yourself
So let me find somebody else
Hey!
Why don't you be a man about it
And set me free
Now you don't care a thing about me
You're just using me
Go on, get out, get out of my life
And let me sleep at night'
Cause you don't really love me
You just keep me hangin' on...

Bette Midler starred in the movie and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. The soundtrack made it to #12 on the Billboard charts while the the cover of "When a Man Loves a Woman" made it to #35 and the title song made it to #3 as a single after Midler got her Oscar nomination
The Rose
Some say love it is a river that drowns the tender reed
Some say love it is a razor that leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love it is a hunger an endless aching need
I say love it is a flower and you it's only seed
It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance
It's the dream afraid of waking
that never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken
who cannot seem to give and the soul afraid of dying
that never learns to live
When the night has been too lonely
and the road has been too long
and you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter
far beneath the bitter snows
lies the seed that with the sun's love
in the spring becomes the rose

November 16, 1970, "I Think I Love You," by The Partridge Family hits number one.
I Think I Love You by The Partridge Family
I'm sleeping
And right in the middle of a good dream
all at once I wake up
From something that keeps knocking at my brain
Before I go insane
I hold my pillow to my head
And spring up in my bed
Screaming out the words I dread:
"I think I love you!"
This morning, I woke up with this feeling
I didn't know how to deal with
And so I just decided to myself
I'd hide it to myself
And never talk about it
And didn't go and shout it
When you walked into the room.
I think I love you
So what am I so afraid of?
I'm afraid that I'm not sure of
A love there is no cure for
I think I love you
Isn't that what life is made of?
Though it worries me to say
I've never felt this way
Believe me You really don't have to worry
I only want to make you happy
And if you say, hey, go away,
I will
But I think better still
I ought to stay around and love you
Do you think I have a case?
Let me ask you to your face:
Do you think you love me?

Georgia On My Mind.
Georgia, Georgia,
The whole day through
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind
I say, Georgia, Georgia
A song of you
Comes as sweet and clear
As moonlight through the pines
Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams
I see

The road leads back to you
I said Georgia,
Ooh Georgia, no peace I find
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind
Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you
Georgia, Georgia,
No peace,

Them that's got shall get
Them that's not shall lose
So the Bible said and it still is news
Mama may have, papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
Thats got his own
Yes, the strong gets more
While the weak ones fade
Empty pockets don't ever make the grade
Mama may have, papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
Thats got his own
Money, you've got lots of friends
Crowding round the door
When your gone, spending ends
They don't come no more
Rich relations give
Crust of bread and such
You can help yourself
But don't take too much
Mama may have, papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
that's got his own
Mama may have, papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own

Excerpt from Captain Jack from the Piano Man album.
Your sister's gone out, she's on a date
And you just sit home and masturbate
The phone is gonna ring soon, but you just can't wait
For that call...
So you stand on the corner in your new English clothes
And you look so polished from your hair down to your toes
But still your finger's gonna pick your nose
After all...
But Captain Jack will get you high tonight
And take you to your special island
Captain Jack will get you by tonight
Just a little push 'n' you'll be smilin'

November 8, 1970, After a three day drinking binge Jim Morrison goes into the recording studio and records himself reading some of his poetry. The other members of the Doors would set the poetry to music after his death. It was released in 1978 with the name "An American Prayer." In an interview in 1970 Jim said "A hero is someone who rebels, or seems to rebel, against the facts of existence and seems to conquer them, but obviously that can work at moments. It can't be a lasting thing...but that's not saying that people shouldn't keep trying to rebel against the facts of existence, Who knows, someday we might conquer death, disease and war".
Lament a poem by Jim Morrison.
Lament for my cock
Sore and crucified
I seek to know you
Acquiring soulful wisdom
You can open walls of mystery
Stripshow
How to acquire death in the morning show
TV death which the child absorbs
Deathwell mystery which makes me write
Slow train, the death of my cock gives life
Forgive the poor old people who gave us entry
Taught us god in the child's prayer in the night
Guitar player
Ancient wise satyr
Sing your ode to my cock
Caress it's lament
Stiffen and guide us, we frozen
Lost cells
The knowledge of cancer
To speak to the heart
And give the great gift
Words Power Trance
this stable friend and the beast of his zoo
Wild haired chicks
Women flowering in their summit
Monsters of skin
Each color connects to create the boat
which rocks the race
Could any hell be more horrible
than now
and real?
I pressed her thigh and death smiled
death, old friend
death and my cock are the world
I can forgive my injuries in the name of
Wisdom
Luxury Romance
Sentence upon sentence
Words are the healing lament
For the death of my cock's spirit
Has no meaning in the soft fire
Words got me the wound and will get me well
I you believe it
All join now and lament the death of my cock
A tongue of knowledge in the feathered night
Boys get crazy in the head and suffer
I sacrifice my cock
on the alter of
silence

The Dope Show by Marilyn Manson.
The drugs they say make us feel so hollow
We love in vain narcissistic and so shallow
The cops and queers to swim you have to swallow
Hate today there's no love for tomorrow
We're all stars now in the dope show
There's a lot of pretty, pretty ones
That want to get you high
But all the pretty, pretty ones Will leave you low
and blow your mind
They love you when you're on all the covers
When you're not then they love another
The drugs they say are made in California
We love your face We'd really like to sell you
The cops and queers make good-looking models
I hate today Who will I wake up with tomorrow?

There's a lot of pretty, pretty ones
Who want to get you high
But all the pretty, pretty ones
Will leave you low
And blow your mind
They'll blow your mind
We're all stars now in the dope show
We're all stars now in the dope show

November 5, 1960, At the age of 33 Johnny Horton plays the Skyline in Austin, Texas. After the show Johnny Horton was killed in a car accident. Hank Williams played his last show at the Skyline in 1952. After Hank died Johnny Horton married Hanks widow (Billy Joe). Horton had a Number One hit with the song "Battle of New Orleans,".
Battle Of New Orleans by Johnny Horton.
In 1814 we took a little trip,
Along with Col. Jackson down the mighty Mississip.
We took a little bacon, and we took a little beans.
And we caught the bloody British near the town of New Orleans.
We looked down the river and we seen the British come,
An there must have been a hundred of them beatin on the drum.
They stepped so high & they made their bugles ring,
we stood beside our cotton bails & didn't say a thing.
Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise
if we didn't fire our muskets 'til we looked them in the eye.
We held our fire 'til we see'd their faces well,
then we opened up our squirrel guns & really gave 'em WELL....
They ran thru the briars and they ran thru the brambles
and they ran thru the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go.
They ran so fast the the hounds couldn't catch 'em
on down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
We fired our cannon till the barrel melted down,
so we grabbed an alligator & we fought another round.
We filled his head with cannon balls, & powered his behind 'n
when we touched the powder off the gator lost his mind.

Unfortunately for everyone the girls show up at the exact time as the police.
Petula peaks threw the window and sees what is coming her way, she turns to the others and says 'that's it then, we got no choice'. She walks over to a tarp in the corner and slides it off of the fully loaded, gold plated Gatling gun she bought with the proceeds from her song the "Ya Ya Twist". One of the Chiffons helps her pull the enormous gun to the window. Petula hands her a box of ammo and says "Feed me baby".
Outside the other girl groups have come face to face with the FBI and the local police.

November 1, 1962, 'He's a Rebel' by the Crystals goes to number one. The Crystals were not allowed to sing on their own record because the record company wanted more experienced singers. They got a trio of singers called the Blossoms to sing the song however two of the Blossoms couldn't make it so they used one of the Chordettes and a Sherille.
He's A Rebel by The Crystals
See the way he walks down the street Watch the way he shuffles his feet
My, he holds his head up high When he goes walking by He's my guy
When he holds my hand I'm so proud 'Cause he's not just one of the crowd
My baby, oh he's the one To try the things they've never done
Just because of that they say
He's a rebel and he'll never ever be any good
He's a rebel and he'll never ever be understood
And just because he doesn't do what everybody else does
That's no reason why I can't give him all my love He is always good to me,
always treats me tenderly 'Cause he's not a rebel,
no no no He's not a rebel, no no no, to me
If they don't like him that way, They won't like me after today
I'll be standing right by his side, when they say
He's a rebel and he'll never ever be any good
He's a rebel 'cause he never ever does what he should
And just because he doesn't do what everybody else does
That's no reason why we can't share a love He is always good to me,
good to him I'll try to be
'Cause he's not a rebel, no no no He's not a rebel,
no no no, to me
