September 30, 1969, The Crosby, Stills and Nash album goes gold on the same day David Crosby's girlfriend Christine Gail Hinton, while driving (with a litter of loose kittens ) in her VW bus, is killed in a head-on accident. David Crosby is called upon to identify her badly damaged body. The Crosby, Stills and Nash album went to #6 on the pop charts and had several hit songs, "Marrakesh Express" and "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes". It also contained a song that David had written for and about Christine.
Guinnevere by David Crosby
Guinnevere had green eyes
Like yours, mi'lady like yours
When she'd walk down
Through the garden
In the morning after it rained
Peacocks wandered aimlessly
Underneath an orange tree
Why can't she see me?
Guinnevere
Drew pentagrams
Like yours, mi'lady like yours
Late at night
When she thought
that no one was watching at all
She shall be free
As she turns her gaze
Down the slope
to the harbor where I lay
Anchored for a day
Guinnevere
Had golden hair
Like yours, mi'lady like yours
Streaming out when we'd ride
Through the warm wind down by the bay
Yesterday
Seagulls circle endlessly
I sing in silent harmony
We shall be free

September 28, 1985, 'Hounds Of Love' went to No.1 on the UK chart. It would be the second number one album for Kate Bush. Not only did Kate produce the album herself, she built a private 48 track studio near her home where she could work at her own pace. The result can only be described as magic. Celtic mysticism meets Pink Floyd. The 12 songs deal with issues of life and death, God, communication, love and dreams.
Hello Earth by Kate Bush
Hello, Earth. Hello, Earth. With just one hand held up high I can blot you out,
Out of sight.
Peek-a-boo, Peek-a-boo, little Earth. With just my heart and my mind I can be driving,
Driving home, And you asleep On the seat. I get out of my car, Step into the night
And look up at the sky. And there's something bright, traveling fast. Look at it go!
Look at it go!
('Listen!')
Watching storms Start to form Over America.
Can't do anything. Just watch them swing With the wind Out to sea.
All you sailors, ('Get out of the waves! Get out of the water!')
All life-savers, ('Get out of the waves! Get out of the water!')
All you cruisers, ('Get out of the waves! Get out of the water!')
All you fishermen, Head for home. Go to sleep, little Earth.
I was there at the birth, Out of the cloudburst, The head of the tempest.
Murderer! Murder of calm.
Why did I go? Why did I go?
'Tiefer, tiefer. Irgendwo in der Tiefe Gibt es ein licht.'
Go to sleep little Earth.

September 26, 1957, West Side Story opened in New York. The musical ran for 734 performances. It was based on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. West Side story was written by Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Soundheim. The play produced several hit songs, including Maria and Tonight. West Side story dealt with social problems in an uncompromising way and some say it was a turning point in American entertainment. The play tells the story of two New York gangs (The Jets and The Sharks) battling over the same turf. It also tells the story of Tony and Maria, who fall in love, despite the fact that they are associated with rival gangs.
GEE, OFFICER KRUPKE from West Side Story
My father is a bastard, My ma's an S.O.B. My grandpa's always plastered, My grandma pushes tea.
My sister wears a mustache, My brother wears a dress. Goodness gracious, that's why I'm a mess!
Yes!
Officer Krupke, you're really a slob. This boy don't need a doctor, just a good honest job.
Society's played him a terrible trick, And sociologic'ly he's sick!
I am sick!
We are sick, we are sick, We are sick, sick, sick, Like we're sociologically sick!
In my opinion, this child don't need to have his head shrunk at all.
Juvenile delinquency is purely a social disease!
Hey, I got a social disease! So take him to a social worker!
Dear kindly social worker, They say go earn a buck.
Like be a soda jerker, Which means like be a schumck.
It's not I'm anti-social, I'm only anti-work. That's why I'm a jerk!
Eek! Officer Krupke, you've done it again. This boy don't need a job, he needs a year in the pen.
It ain't just a question of misunderstood; Deep down inside him, he's no good!
I'm no good! We're no good, we're no good! We're no earthly good,
Like the best of us is no damn good!
The trouble is he's crazy.
The trouble is he drinks.
The trouble is he's lazy.
The trouble is he stinks.
The trouble is he's growing.
The trouble is he's grown.
Krupke, we got troubles of our own! Gee, Officer Krupke, We're down on our knees,
Cause no one wants a fellow with a social disease.
Gee, Officer Krupke, What are we to do? Gee, Officer Krupke,
Krup you!

September 25, 1980, John Bonham died at the age of 32. While staying at Jimmy Page's Windsor mansion, Bonham had passed out from drinking to much vodka. He was laid on a bed face up. Tour manager Benji LeFevre found him dead that morning. The cause of death was asphyxiation caused by choking on his own vomit, the coroners inquest found no other drugs in Bonham's body.
Excerpt from Carouselambra by Led Zeppelin
Where was your word, where did you go
Where was your helping, where was your bow, bow
Dulled is the armor, cold is the day
Hard was the journey, dark was the way,
I heard the word, I couldn't stay, I couldn't stand it another day,
Touched by the timely callin', roused from the keeper's sleep
Release the grip, throw down the key
Held now within the knowing, rest now within the beat
Take of the fruit but guard the seed
Baby, I couldn't stay
Held now within the knowing, rest now within the beat
Take of the fruit but guard the seed
Oh, take of the fruit but guard the seed

September 24, 1953, At the age of 43, while in Memphis, Howlin' Wolf recorded several songs at the legendary Sun Studio. Among them were three songs written by Wolf, "Just My Kind", "Work For Your Money", and "Momma Died And Left Me". At 6 foot 3 inches and close to 300 pounds he was an imposing presence. Howlin' Wolf's voice has been compared to "the sound of heavy machinery operating on a gravel road". On stage Wolf had an act that few who witnessed it could ever forget. Shouting, whooping and hollering, furiously blowing into a harmonica over the wail of electrified instruments, Wolf was capable of bringing down the house while simultaneously "scaring its patrons out of their wits.
Just My Kind by Howlin Wolf
Just my color, oooh you're just my kind
Well you're just my color, ooh you're just my kind
Well you keep me worried darlin', bothered all the time.
Well I told my baby, cried all night long
I told my baby now, cried all night long
Well you just my color darlin', you just my kind.
Well I wrang my hands, cried all night long
I wrang my hands, cried all night long
Well you just my color darlin'
you done me wrong.

September 23, 1969, The "Paul is dead" rumor begins with an article in the Illinois University newspaper. The story claimed that Paul McCartney had been killed in a car crash in 1966 and had been replaced by a look-a-like. A radio station in Detroit picked up on the claim and the story went worldwide. Clues could be found in the lyrics and covers of the Beatles albums. By late October 1969 the hoax had gained so much attention that McCartney came out of seclusion at his Scottish farm to deny the story. Even though it was disproved all those years ago the hoax still persists.
A Day In The Life by The Beatles
I read the news today oh, boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph.
He blew his mind out in a car,
he didn't notice that the lights had changed.
A crowd of people stood and stared they'd seen his face before,
nobody was really sure if he was from the house of Lords'
I saw a film today oh, boy The English army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away But I just had a look Having read the book,
Id love to turn you on...

September 22, 1964, "Fiddler on the Roof" opened on Broadway. It was the beginning of a run of 3,242 performances. Fiddler on the Roof is one of the great stage (and film) musicals. It was written by Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick, and Joseph Stein. It stared Zero Mostel as Tevye the milkman. The Fiddler is a metaphor of survival through tradition and joyfulness. In the play Tevye equates life with being a fiddler on a roof: trying to scratch out a simple, pleasant tune without breaking his neck. "How do we keep our balance?" he asks. "That I can tell you in one word: Tradition!
Tevye and his wife sing this prayer for their daughters.
May the Lord protect and defend you,
May He always shield you from shame,
May you come to be in years full well a shining name.
May you be like Ruth and like Esther,
May you be deserving of praise,
Strengthen them o Lord and keep them from the stranger's way.
May God bless you and grant you long life (may the Lord fulfill our Sabbath prayer for you),
May God make you good mothers and wives (may He send you husbands who will care for you)
May the Lord protect and defend you,
May the Lord preserve you from pain,
Favor them o Lord with happiness and peace,
O hear our Sabbath prayer,Amen.

September 20, 1970, In Miami, Jim Morrison was found not guilty of lewd behavior but guilty of indecent exposure and profanity. The arrest stemmed from a local concert where an intoxicated Jim simulated fellatio on Krieger as he played. Jim then went into a speech blasting the audience for being there for all the wrong reasons, he assumed what they really wanted was to see his penis so he showed them. The concert hall floor was littered with discarded clothes at the end of the concert.
Highlights of Jims speech that night...
I'm not talkin bout no revolution! I'm not talkin bout no demonstration! I'm talkin bout LOVE, LOVE,LOVE!
Why don't about fifty of you come up here and LOVE my ass!
You're all a bunch of fuckin' idiots. Letting people tell you what you're gonna do.
Let people push you around. (...) Maybe you love it. Maybe you like being pushed around.
Maybe you love getting your face stuck in the shit.
Your all a bunch of slaves! What are you gonna do about it!
DLAK note: Some people contend that Morrison only pretended to show his penis, I'd like to think he did.

September 19, 1973, Ingram Cecil Connor III died of a heroin overdose in Joshua Tree, California. He was better known as Gram Parsons. He died at the age of 26. Member of The Byrds (He left the band after refusing to play in apartheid ridden South Africa), and The Flying Burrito Brothers. Parsons described his records as "Cosmic American Music." Parsons' body disappeared from the airport where it was being readied to be shipped to Louisiana for burial. His former road manager, Phil Kaufman, claimed that Gram had remarked after Clarence White's (Kentucky Colonels and the Byrds) funeral in July of that year that he did not want to be buried when he died, but instead would rather be taken out to Joshua Tree and burned. Kaufman and a friend managed to steal Parson's body from the airport and, in a borrowed hearse, drove Parsons' body to Joshua Tree where they cremated it. They were arrested several days later and fined $700 for burning the coffin, since stealing a body was not a crime.
In My Hour Of Darkness by Gram Parsons
In my hour of darkness, in my time of need
oh, Lord grant me vision, oh, Lord grant me speed
once I knew a young man went driving through the night
miles and miles without a word with just his high-beam lights
who'd have ever thought they'd build such a deadly Denver bend
to be so strong, to take so long as it would till the end
in my hour of darkness, in my time of need oh, Lord grant me vision
oh, Lord grant me speed another young man safely strummed his silver string guitar
and he played to people everywhere
some say he was a star but he was just a country boy
his simple songs confessand the music he had in him
so very few possess
in my hour of darkness, in my time of need oh, Lord grant me vision, oh, Lord grant me speed
then there was an old man, kind and wise with age and he read me just like a book and he never missed a page
and I loved him like my father and I loved him like my friend
and I knew his time would shortly come but I did not know just when
in my hour of darkness, in my time of need oh, Lord grant me vision, oh, Lord grant me speed
oh, Lord grant me vision, oh, Lord grant me speed

September 18, 1970, Jimi Hendrix took nine sleeping pills after having drank a bottle of wine. The girl he was staying with found him with vomit on his face. An ambulance was called. It arrived about 11.20 a.m. Hendrix was still alive when he was placed in the ambulance. Sometime in the next twenty-five minutes before they arrived at St. Mary Abbot's Hospital, Jimi Hendrix choked to death. He was pronounced D.O.A. Hendrix left the message 'I need help bad man', on his managers answer phone earlier that night. The death certificate lists the cause as "inhalation of vomit due to barbituate intoxication." Later, insufficient evidence leads to an open verdict on his demise. Nonetheless, some contend that if Hendrix had been put into an upright position rather than left lying on his back, he might not have suffocated.
The pathologist reported a large amount of Seconol in Jimi's blood but no reason to assume that suicide was the cause of death.
His final recording 'Voodoo Chile', was released after his death and shot to the Number one on the charts.
Voodoo Chile by Jimi Hendrix
Well, the night I was born
Lord I swear the moon turned a fire red The night I was born

DLAK note: We miss you Roger, please come back. Its lonley here on the dark side.
Amused To Death by Roger Waters
Doctor Doctor, what is wrong with me This supermarket life is getting long
What is the half life of a color TV What is the shelf life of a teenage queen
Ooh western woman Ooh western girl News hound sniffs the air
When Jessica Hahn goes down He latches on to that symbol of detachment
Attracted by the peeling away of feeling The celebrity of the abused shell, the belle
Ooh western woman Ooh western girl Ooh western woman Ooh western girl
And the children on Melrose Strut their stuff Is absolute zero cold enough
And out in the valley, warm and clean The little ones sit by their TV screens
No thoughts to think No tears to cry All sucked dry
Down to the very last breath Bartender what is wrong with me? Why am I so out of breath?
The captain said excuse me ma'am This species has amused itself to death
We watched the tragedy unfold We did as we were told
We bought and sold It was the greatest show on earth But then it was over
We ohhed and aahed We drove our racing cars We ate our last few jars of caviar
And somewhere out there in the stars A keen-eyed look-outSpied a flickering light
Our last hurrah Our last hurrah And when they found our shadows Grouped 'round the TV sets
They ran down every lead They repeated every test They checked out all the data on their list
And then, the alien anthropologists Admitted they were still perplexed
But on eliminating every other reason For our sad demise They logged the only explanation left
This species has amused itself to death No tears to cry, no feelings left
This species has amused itself to death.

September 8, 1962, The "Monster Mash" by Bobby "Boris" Pickett enters the Hot 100 at #85. It's a tongue in cheek take-off on the late night monster movies. He recorded the song using improvised sound effects, the creaky door opening is a nail being pulled from a piece of wood, the boiling cauldron is Pickett blowing bubbles into a cup of water with a straw and the chains are him rattling chains up and down. He also did all the voices. It reached No.1 on October 20, 1962. It re-entered the Hot 100 eight years later, on August 29, 1970, and peaked at 91. Almost three years after that, on May 5, 1973, it made a third re-entry, and this time went all the way to number 10. The song was later copied by the punk rock band The Misfits.
Monster Mash by Bobby Boris Pickett
I was working in the lab late one night When my eyes beheld an eerie sight
For my monster from his slab began to rise And suddenly to my surprise
He did the mash He did the monster mash The monster mash It was a graveyard smash
He did the mash It caught on in a flash He did the mash He did the monster mash
From my laboratory in the castle east To the master bedroom where the vampires feast
The ghouls all came from their humble abodes To get a jolt from my electrodes, they did the Mash...
The zombies were having fun The party had just begun The guests included Wolf Man Dracula and his son
The scene was rockin', all were digging the sounds Igor on chains, backed by his baying hounds
The coffin-bangers were about to arrive With their vocal group, "The Crypt-Kicker Five" They played the mash ...
Out from his coffin, Drac's voice did ring Seems he was troubled by just one thing
He opened the lid and shook his fist And said, "Whatever happened to my Transylvania twist?"
It's now the mash ...
Now everything's cool, Drac's a part of the band And my monster mash is the hit of the land
For you, the living, this mash was meant too When you get to my door, tell them Boris sent you
Then you can mash ...

Excerpt from How Long Will They Mourn Me
It's kinda hard to be optimistic When your homies lying dead on the pavement twisted
Y'all don't hear me doe, I'm trying hard to make amends
But I'm losing all my muthafuckin friends (damn) They should've shot me when I was born

September 5, 1969, The MC5 play The Pavilian in New York, the opening act is Iggy Pop and the Stooges. During the concert Iggy insults the audience, smears himself with peanut butter and jumps off the stage, inventing the punk rock stage dive.
I Wanna Be Your Dog by The Stooges
So messed up I want you here
In my room I want you here
Now we’re gonna be face-to-face
And I’ll lay right down in my favorite place
And now I wanna be your dog
Now I wanna be your dog
to feel your hand
And lose my heart on the burning sands
And now I wanna be your dog
And now I wanna be your dog
Now I wanna be your dog
Well c’mon

ROME quote of the week.

"The Roman people are suffering, slaves have taken all the work, the nobles have taken all the land and the streets are full of homeless and starving."

The song was originally written by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht for 'TheThreePenny Opera' in 1928, they had based The ThreePenny Opera on English poet John Gays 'The Beggars Opera' which was written in 1728.
Darins version went to No. 1 on the charts, sold several million copies, and won the Grammy for Record of the year.
Mack The Knife
Oh, the shark, babe, has such teeth, dear
And it shows them pearly white
Just a jackknife has old MacHeath, babe
And he keeps it … ah … out of sight.
Ya know when that shark bites, with his teeth, babe
Scarlet billows start to spread
Fancy gloves, though, wears old MacHeath, babe
So there’s nevah, nevah a trace of red.
Now on the sidewalk … uuh, huh … whoo …
sunny mornin’ … uuh, huh Lies a body just oozin' life … eeek!
And someone’s sneakin' ‘round the corner
Could that someone be Mack the Knife?
A-there's a tugboat … huh, huh, huh …
down by the river don’tcha know
Where a cement bag’s just a'droopin' on down
Oh, that cement is just, it's there for the weight, dear
Five'll get ya ten old Macky’s back in town.
Now, d'ja hear ‘bout Louie Miller? He disappeared, babe
After drawin' out all his hard-earned cash
And now MacHeath spends just like a sailor
Could it be our boy's done somethin' rash?
Now … Jenny Diver … ho, ho … yeah … Sukey Tawdry

Ooh … Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Oh, the line forms on the right, babe
Now that Macky’s back in town.
Aah … I said Jenny Diver … whoa … Sukey Tawdry
Look out to Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Yes, that line forms on the right, babe
Now that Macky’s back in town …
Look out … old Macky is back!!
